Let's get the fun started!

First off is SLC Punk!, which - while still the Worst Film of the Year - is now totally unrepresented in everyone's Bottom Fifteens. Its -3.01 score is easily the best total for a Worst Film of the Year, so MMZ's first stinker definitely benefited from these past few years. I'll be using SLC Punk! as a yardstick to compare future, terrible seasons as we go.

While Con Air was liked by more people and outscored Cube in yearly points, Cube cracked its way into 3 Top Fifteen lists and held on to its crown. Not much else was particularly polarizing other than (no surprise) Yellow Submarine, which I now realize I probably should have allowed Snobhunter to vote on. Oh well.

In odd things Phil does: he did indeed put The Negotiator on his Top Fifteen even though he didn't give it a super like vote, but we're going to be seeing a smattering of similar results, and not all of them from Phil. Why did he do that? I can only assume it's because Phil stuck to my templates for the first thirteen years, where only #1 films were assigned a super like, and then didn't realize until he saw his Top Fifteen list from 2013 that he had overlooked it. (A few people do this, actually.) It's fine and I obviously designed the template to facilitate that, but it doesn't mean I won't make fun of him for all sorts of other fun things as we go.

Oh, and do you see that super dislike that The Man cast for Picking Up the Pieces? Enjoy the sight while you can, folks, because it will be fourteen years before The Man super dislikes another one of his own movies. Just a quick taste of the shitstorm that will unfurl when I discuss bias again in Part II.

Best Film of the Year: Cube

Worst Film of the Year: SLC Punk! (but it's getting better)

Losing Its Edge: Con Air, having been dropped from two 2013 Top Fifteen lists

Results:

Another survey, another reshuffling for Year 2. This time Dark City is the victor after Lep in the Hood fell off a few top Fifteen Lists and faced some indifferent votes (though the people who really liked it kept it on their Top Fifteens). Donnie Darko has always had its critics and has been shedding points each survey, and shockingly Run, Lola, Run would have even outscored it if you factor out the Top Fifteen Lists altogether, which is extra surprising when you remember that only five people even saw Lola, all of whom liked it. Still a strong showing from the top crop of Year 2. (Houdini in particular had a like streak of six consecutive movies this year, sandwiched between two super dislikes.)

How High would have been tied in last place with Anywhere But Here if it weren't for those pesky Bottom Fifteen lists, and instead drops to the bottom spot. For what it's worth, Anywhere But Here managed to snag the most super dislikes of the year.

In odd things Phil does, he did indeed put Lep in the Hood in his Bottom Fifteen even though he marked it Indifferent during the earlier part of the survey. This, uh, might be a trend worth watching...

Best Film of the Year: Dark City thanks to Lep slipping

Worst Film of the Year: How High

Mr. Improved: Ronin, which previously held the Worst Film title

Results:

There it is, fellas: the only film in this entire survey to receive the same vote from all eight participants. Gia might have fallen from a few Bottom Fifteen lists this time around and actually seen its score improve, but that -13.18 still locks it in as the Worse Film of All Time. Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale how shitty a film that was.

But the bad doesn't end there, as both Very Bad Things and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka take a heavy beating (with, oddly, some upvotes for Sucka from Elad and Phil, who I can only assume were mistaking it with Black Dynamite). Remember SLC Punk!'s score? It was -3.01, which would put it ahead of the entire bottom four this year and be less than 1/4th Gia's score. One of the benefits of letting everyone vote freely on every film is that the point spreads will be much more meaningful this time around, and it's only taken three years to show the disparity.

From Dusk Till Dawn is still the yearly champ by a wide (though shrinking) margin, as Y Tu Mama Tambien dropped out of numerous Top Fifteen lists and couldn't even muster a super like. PCU and (despite my best efforts to stop it) L.A. Confidential round out the top of a very weak year.

Last fun fact of the year: it will take another decade before we go three consecutive films without a single dislike, though the tepid response to Bad Boys hardly matters much.

Best Film of the Year: From Dusk Till Dawn with no competition

Worst Film of the Year: Gia, also with no competition

Hotly Contested: Leprechaun 3, featuring once again into a Bottom Fifteen list for Phil...

I love watching the thumbs go from down to up to back down again. It's a lovely rainbow that shows the rollercoaster of Year 4. (Though Snobby in his corner seemed to be much more up on this year than the rest, and Houdini once again had a streak of six likes in a row.)

The Virgin Suicides continues to be the standout of the year, though it's a far cry from its dominant position back in 2009. The Warriors and Princess Mononoke both outscored it in Top Fifteen points, and Mononoke - which used to be hotly contested - was both the holder of most Top Fifteen appearances and only 0.02 points off of the #2 spot.

In fact, this seems like a good place to begin a little series I like to call The Fall of the House of Alaay. Because you see that 6.61 score for Princess Mononoke? It's the highest-ranking movie he will have all survey. And here it is.... in third place for its year and not even in the Top 20 overall. We'll have more fun spiraling that gutter as we go.

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood sucks and we know it, though it was actually outscored this year by From Dusk Till Dawn 2 when you factor out the Bottom Fifteen lists. FDTD2 has been getting worse and worse each survey, so who knows what 2021 will bring. Because it makes The Man feel bad, note that Cat Ballou is also there getting shit on and his super like vote for that movie makes me sick.

Hope you've been paying attention to Phil's Bottom Fifteen votes...

Best Film of the Year: The Virgin Suicides with a shrinking lead

Worst Film of the Year: Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood

What the Fuck Award: Gamera 3: Iris Kakusei, dropping from -1.10 to -3.38 for only 7 minutes of runtime

Results:

Score one for Marcello Mastroianni, as for the first time Divorce: Italian Style has pulled itself out of last place. Yeah, sure, it made it onto three Bottom Fifteen lists, but MMZ and Alaay ensured that Out On Parole took the cake by a meager -0.17 differential... and that's with two Bottom Fifteen appearances from people who didn't even super dislike it. While Urbania was also a factor, Urbania has always been a clear runner-up to those two Titans of Suck.

As per usual, at the top of the crown is the one-two combo of Dangerous Lives and Pieces of April with almost universal acclaim save a lone "indifferent" from Snobby. Phil ensured Blackball stayed in a strong third, and Chasing Liberty survived a brutal 3v3 battle to limp to the finish line with a 0.02 score, which is, for the record, tied for the lowest score for a positive film in the entire survey. In a sign of how weak Year Five was, every other film falls in the negatives. Human Nature was another fun showdown, but for the third time in a row it wound up squarely in the negatives.

Best Film of the Year: The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys

Worst Film of the Year: Out On Parole thanks to some schenanigans

I love seeing the strong red from The Man and Snobby against the heavy blue from Elad, who has four films in his Top Fifteen this year, including three in a row for what is clearly Elad's highlight of all of MovieFest. I wonder if MMZ not being there had anything to do with it...

Speaking of MMZ, once again his lone contribution - Coffee and Cigarettes - was utterly ripped to shreds, even with Houdini's indifferent vote. It did improve by nearly 3 points from the 2013 survey (in general, it was hard for most films to stay on the extreme edge of the point system), but still, Coffee retained a wide margin over Fronterz. Fronterz, however, has a unique distinction worth mentioning: if you were to remove all films that were put on a Bottom Fifteen list, Fronterz would be our lowest-ranking film of all time. Just goes to show what seven downvotes can do. (It ultimately came in at the 17th Worst Film of All Time, which also goes to show that there is a lot of garbage still to get through. And, because I love using it as a point of reference, SLC Punk! was the 62nd Worse Film of All Time, just to further illustrate the gap of suckiness still to come.)

In other shitty films, Cecil B. Demented fell out of a few Bottom Fifteen lists but actually did worse in this new format (despite The Man trying to save his baby), and Genesis struggled with only Elad's meager support.

Battle Royale is the unsurprising winner, but holy shit has it taken a tumble since the 2009 survey, going from 14.20 points to 10.00 to 6.86. For a previous Best Film of All Time, it has certainly lost some luster and is already well out of the running to reclaim its crown.

A Very Long Engagement, one of the more controversial films we've had, proved true to its history: four likes, two dislikes, one bottom fifteen, and just barely slipped into the negatives.

And lastly, as we continue the Fall of the House of Alaay, note the precipitious drop of 11:14, his one-time best film and only ever entry in the Top Ten, falling from 8.45 to 5.60 to 4.31. Rachel Leigh Cook would be spinning in her grave.

Best Film of the Year: Battle Royale and fading

Worst Film of the Year: Coffee and Cigarettes

Caught a Break: Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, which continues to improve year by year

In a year that was all over the place, our only point of agreement comes with how much Farce of the Penguins sucks, which has a worse score than Bandidas and The Guru combined. Aside from Farce, we're not necessarily in agreement on Year 7.

Elephant takes the cake (despite MMZ's downvote) with Mysterious Skin in second (despite Phil's downvote) and then comes Oldboy in third (with both a downvote *and* Bottom Fifteen appearance from Houdini). We also had multiple split feelings on The Baxter, Dorm Days 2: Semester @ Sea, The OH in Ohio, Mini's First Time, and American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, resulting in a muddle of films floating around the 0.00 mark. (The Baxter made a pretty strong comeback from 2013 and almost squeaked into the positives.) With Farce anchoring down the bottom, it's easy to see that Year 7 was overall a negative, but just how badly did it do compared to the rest of the field? We'll have to wait for Part 2 to find out.

Best Film of the Year: Elephant thanks to some Top Ten appearances

Worst Film of the Year: Farce of the Penguins

Try as we might, The Man and I couldn't keep Tampopo down, as the film was in the positives before our two Bottom Fifteen appearances were added, and even then it ended up a middle-of-the-pack film. That's a huge improvement from its perpetual second place status.

That leaves Weeping Camel alone at the bottom, but its numbers are slowly improving, and critical distaste for both Death at a Funeral and Red Dawn put them in close reach of that bottom spot. (Red Dawn in particular has a heavy drop this year with no one choosing to defend it.)

Crank proved once again an excllent action-packed response to Tampopo, earning it five super likes and five Top Fifteen appearances against Elad's lone action-film-hating downvote. Its huge point total dwarfs second place Sad Movie, which really only had MMZ's fervent support. Elad also did his best to keep Glengarry Glen Ross from taking the lead.

Lil' Pimp continues its journey all over the map, going from 1.50 to -6.36 to -2.13. It'll probably be film of the year next survey.

Further into the Fall of the House of Alaay, Sad Movie and Glengarry Glen Ross - his #3 and #6 best films, respectively - still can't even beat Crank when combined. That's not a good look.

Best Film of the Year: Crank

Worst Film of the Year: The Story of the Weeping Camel

For the third time in a row, Year 9 has reshuffled its top 3 and Best Film of the Year. The Fall eeked out a victory with a 0.01 margin over Dr. Horrible, which once again suffered from MMZ's long-standing hatred. Further into the Fall of the House of Alaay comes Let the Right One In, this year's highest point earner before Top Fifteen lists are factored in, but only appearing in the one Top Fifteen list this time around and slipping to third place. Meanwhile Wendy and Lucy quietly held a respectable fourth despite only having one super like to its name. Overall the positive films of Year 9 had a respectable showing.

The Man and Alaay were both big fans of Year 9 with three Top Fifteen appearances. Not surprisingly, all of The Man's Top Fifteen picks were for films he proposed, which is something I will continue to point out until the day I die.

The rest of the year was pretty fucking bad, with you guys particularly hating Who Made the Potato Salad?. This the worse-placing film since Year 3, and I once again feel compelled to point out that SLC Punk!'s -3.01 score would put it ahead of the entire bottom five for Year 9. The early morning in particular was unimpressive, with a bevy of dislikes starting from Sydney White until completion.

The only other interesting note comes from Repo!, the unmitigated winner of most contentious film ever. Everyone had an opinion with a mix of super dislikes, super likes, Bottom Fifteen appearances, and Top Fifteen appearances. Ultimately TheBluePlayer and I (with an assist from MMZ) hated the film enough to drag it into the negatives where that fucking trash belongs.

Best Film of the Year: The Fall, at least until 2021

Worst Film of the Year: Who Made the Potato Salad?, though not for lack of competition

Most Improved: Sex Drive, going from -0.50 to 0.40 to 2.57

Goddamn this was a monster year. With 29 super likes and 19 Top Fifteen votes against only a single Bottom Fifteen appearance, it's not even worth pretending that Year 10 didn't take the crown as Best Year of All Time.

And while we're talking Best of All Times, let's give a shout out to a film with a point total so grossly high that I can't pretend to ignore it. Congrats to the Best Film of All Time: Black Dynamite. Phil was the lone holdout in a sea of super likes to go with 5 Top Fifteen appearances. It scored both the most yearly points as well as the most Top Fifteen points of the entire survey and crushed the Second Best Film of All Time (which we've yet to see). All hail Black Dynamite.

But goddamn if that weren't enough with both Primer and In Bruges above the 9.00 mark. Crank: High Voltage rounds out the positives with an impressive score for 7th place, though it was nearly a solid 4 points behind the original Crank. Elephant, the Best Film of Year 7 with a 6.07 score, would have only barely eeked ahead of Troll 2 to take 5th place this year, showing the strength of the competition for Year 10. (Troll 2 took a tumble from its 2013 standing, but it won't be the only troll-related film to suffer on this new survey.)

Bitch Slap is in the gutter and actually did worse from its place on the 2013 survey. Frankly the bottom films this year did pretty terribly, which just goes to show how strong the Top 7 were to balance the bottom out by such a wide margin. These are probably the most unified opinions we've had for the entire survey (both likes and dislikes), and all those dislikes really dragged down the bottom films. (Again, SLC Punk! would have been behind Ghost Rider.)

In Phil's world, not only was he indifferent to Black Dynamite, he also didn't care much for In Bruges, Troll 2, Primer, or The King of Kong. And while he had three films in his Top Fifteen for this year, they included both The Book of Love and Crank: High Voltage. (Not having attended Year 8, the original Crank did not make his Top Fifteen). It might sound like I'm being petty, but I genuinely appreciate Phil for spreading out the numbers as only he can. Keep it up, buddy!

Best Film of the Year: Black Dynamite

Worst Film of the Year: Bitch Slap

Mr. Unlucky: The Book of Love, as even Phil's Top Fifteen vote couldn't save it

It was pretty amusing going from the full attendance and ocean of accolades that was Year 10 to.... this. Tepid results for a tepid year, as the low attendance and lack of a huge hit makes Year 11 a total blur. (Though not for Snobby, who was generally a big fan.)

Best Worst Movie's lone Top Fifteen appearance gave it the edge to beat out Unstoppable and take the Best Film of the Year title, but its pitiful score makes it the worst-placing Film of the Year in the overall survey. (It came in at #39 overall.)

Expendables took a huge tumble to land in the bottom, but once you get past Dead Snow, nothing else stands out as particularly awful. Obviously I need to speak about Rubber, the former Worst Film of Year 11, which, despite three super dislikes and two Bottom Fifteen appearances, had enough of a fan following to shift from a -4.52 in 2013 to a mere -0.56 in 2017. It's almost as though The Man's strategy of upvoting his own films affected the results in some way.

Otherwise this was a pretty forgettable year, and Alaay in particular felt we had a rough stretch in the morning. In a brief reprieve to the Fall of the House of Alaay, both Unstoppable and Machete had a slight uptick from 2013, but like a derelict train that only a savy last-day-on-the-job conductor can control, he also had his first Worst Film of the Year in The Expendables. It won't be his last.

Best Film of the Year: Best Worst Movie with a weak showing

Worst Film of the Year: The Expendables

What Were They About Again?: Charlie Bartlett, Downfall, and Love and Other Drugs, all moving from negative to positive as we collectively forgot to dislike them

After a fairly weak start, Year 12 has an interesting stretch of four straight movies that were almost universally liked (with Phil, of course, doing his own thing). Among these was Drive as a big winner thanks to those Top Fifteen appearances, which helped it nearly double it score. No shame for Kaboom though, which had a decent increase from its 2013 results. Troll Hunter, while still a fan favorite, fell off of three Top Fifteen lists in these four years and is yet another troll-themed film to suffer on the 2017 survey. And while it had its detractors, Phil made sure The Break-up Artist stayed solidly positive in fourth place. Me and my soulmate - the main character from that film - salute him.

While not everyone despised it, five super dislikes and two Bottom Fifteen appearances put The Six Wives of Henry LaFey in the basement and is once again The Man's first Worst Film of the Year (though not his last). Those Bottom Fifteen appearances kept it solidly below Black & Sexy and Truck Turner, and once again SLC Punk's -3.01 score would have put it ahead of the entire bottom five for Year 12. Between the bad showing at the bottom and the titan that is Drive, it'll be interesting to see where Year 12 lands on the Best Of Years list in Part II.

One of the reasons I decided to move away from the Top/Bottom Four picks for each year is that certain years just didn't - I felt - have four good movies. I remembered seeing Goon dominate the 2013 survey and thought it was a byproduct of the survey forcing people to pick their top films each year instead of letting them vote individually as they desired. I assumed when given free range to like/dislike that Goon would mostly be forgotten.

Turns out I was wrong, as unfettered from restrictions you guys still really fucking loved Goon. Elad was mostly indifferent (both to Goon and the year in general) but spoilers - we're going to be seeing a lot of that soon from him. Timecrimes also held up well, and even Premium Rush had a point jump from the 2013 survey. I was expecting more indifferent votes for Year 12 than this and - while far from the glory of Year 10 - I was surprised by the enthusiasm.

We also enthusiastically trashed Liberal Arts again. Since I love using SLC Punk as a yardstick, let's point out that Liberal Arts is three times worse as a film, which is now officially proven by math. Also bad was the stoppage-time-causing nightmare Give My Regards to Broad Street, though really the entire bottom six is nothing to write home about.

There were some other fun changes to this year, with Dredd going from -2.00 to 1.42, Side Effects dropping nearly 2 points, and Mean Girls 2 falling into the red zone. And after a five-year break, MMZ once again claims a Worse Film of the Year award, though silver lining: it's the last Worse Film of the Year he'll take for the rest of the survey.

Best Film of the Year: Goon, still loveable

Worst Film of the Year: Liberal Arts

Get excited, everybody! It's time for new data!

And the results are tepid as fuck. Only one Top Fifteen and one Bottom Fifteen appearance mixed with a bevy of indifferent votes. Speaking off.... yes, Phil did indeed mark the entire year as Indifferent. Part of me thought perhaps he accidentally double clicked and skipped Year 14, but the other part of me knows the truth. What he did do is prove an excellent distraction to Elad, who only voted on three films. And then there's MMZ and The Man, handing out dislikes as though they're candy. (Phil and Elad, with no past survey answers to use as a template, almost totally fall apart the next few years, which will happen when you've never actually watched a movie at MovieFest.)

Anyway, turns out that lone Top Fifteen vote was enough to put You're Next slightly over its competition, but DeLuca will have two more shots at revenge coming up. Boyz in the Hood was also fairly well liked, and that about rounds out the positive films for this weak as fuck year.

It also turns out I was lying with my teaser, as An American Affair is the only film on this survey to have fewer than two votes, with a meager dislike coming from Snobhunter.

In the negatives, we've got another disastrous Star Wars film in The Battle for Endor, earning Snobhunter his first and only Worst Film of the Year award. There was a slew of mediocrity at the bottom so bad they aren't worth talking about, including Fall of the House of Alaay's own The Conversation, and it doesn't take more than a quick glance to see that Year 14 is going to be solidly in the negatives.

Best Film of the Year: You're Next, Houdini's first (and only) BFotY

It's Elad's turn not to give a shit, with a lone vote tossed Hunger's way, though it's not exactly like Phil had much to say either. Speaking of Phil... here's a pointless non-sequitor!

{This feels like a fun place for a really boring tangent related to the scoring system. We'll make the text purple because math = fun & purple = fun. You can't argue with that.

First off: what you're seeing for results are rounded out to the nearest two decimal places. There are a lot of "ties" that aren't truly ties at all. For reference, an "Indifferent" vote from Phil comes out to -0.0542452830188679. Two questions: (1) Why a negative value and (2) why so crazy?

To answer the first, when you add up all of Phil's votes (both negative and positive), he cast a total +11.5 pts on the survey, not factoring Bottom and Top Fifteen Lists. This means he liked/super liked more films than he disliked/super disliked. Because I want all totals to equal 0 for everyone (more on why below), I took the default values for each vote (which were +/- 0.7 for a normal vote, +/- 1.0 for a super vote, and +/-0.0 for an Indifferent) and then modified them by simple math. I took the user's total scores for all movies before conversion (in this case, +11.5 for Phil), divided it by the number of films they voted on (212), got a value (0.0542452830188679), and then subtracted that from each vote. So a "like" vote for Phil goes from 0.7 to 0.645754716981132 and a dislike from -0.7 to -0.7542452830188679.

Now looking at those numbers, you'll notice his positive-voted films are slightly less than the default value and his negative-voted films are slightly more than the default value. This is because we need to equal out that +11.5 total so that when all of his new films are summed up they will equal 0.00, so each positive film takes a slight hit and each negative film gets a slight boost.

Essentially this means that everyone who was more positive on the survey (Alaay @ +12.3 | Elad @ +15.7 | Houdini @ +36.9 | Phil @ +11.5 | Snobhunter @ +17.2) had all of their values slightly shifted into the negatives, whereas the negative Nancy's (TBP @ -9.8 | MMZ @ -8.3 | TM @ -9.6) had the inverse: all of their values were slightly increased. This doesn't mean that Houdini's votes counted for less, but that because he was generally more positive about the films - since his average response was to like a movie - the films he disliked gained more weight while the films he did like have less weight.

Ultimately this meant that no film was truly Indifferent. For TBP, MMZ, and The Man, an Indifferent movie was slightly positive since their general reaction is to dislike movies and for everyone else an Indifferent movie was slightly negative.

The natural question is "why?" Obviously I could have left it the way it was, but (a) I like the idea of normalizing everyone so that all our totals equal 0, (b) I like the idea that if your tendency is to "like" then a dislike should hold more weight since it varied from the norm, and (c) I like crazy-looking numbers.

Now some will point out a certain unfairness. A super dislike from Houdini, for instance, weighs in at -1.15185185185185 whereas a super dislike from The Man weighs in at -0.962645914396887. Isn't it unreasonable, one would ask, for Houdini's super dislike films to have an extra -0.189205937454963 influence?

The answer is yes, but also that I didn't care and that it had almost no impact. I ran the numbers with no conversion and while a few films may have swapped places, there was mostly no change. For the most part the films that we liked had a marginal increase and the films we didn't like had a marginal decrease, way more films had tied and boring values, and the largest gap consistuted a +0.31 change, which is still pretty small. So instead let's use crazy numbers because crazy = fun and purple = fun and math = purple.}

Back to Year 15, where things kinda sorta fell apart after The Prince and Me, with tepid to bad results for the entire morning slot of films. And aside from a bunch of likes from Alaay, even the early hours had its detractors, which is why Kung Fury sticks out like a sore thumb. It scored 6 votes from the only people bothering to answer the survey this year and factored into four Top Fifteen lists to give it a massive lead over the field. Blood Simple. did well, but its lack of Top Fifteen momentum kept it far from the top.

Speaking of Blood Simple., this will be Alaay's best film since 2013, the last time we did a survey. Coming in at 50th place overall, that's not a ringing endorsement. Also not a ringing endorsement for him? The epic disaster of Don't Be a Menace and I'm a Cyborg, which took away any ground he may have made. His only consolation is that Leprechaun: Origins did worse. That film was rightly lambasted and ended up as The Man's second Worst Film of the Year. To the Man's credit, he himself gave it a super dislike. (Remember in Year 1 when I said it would take 14 more years? Here we are.) He also made the foolish decision of going back to Dead Snow even though it proved so fruitless the first time.

Extremely surprising to me was that Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter was actually in the positives before you factor in The Man's Bottom Fifteen vote. So suck it, Broderick, who baffingly didn't cast a dislike against a film he's spent years decrying.

Oh, and as good as Kung Fury did, it's not the best film of the past four years. Stay tuned to next year when another film edged it out by a mere 0.14 points.

Nobody keeps John DeLuca down! With a huge 9.29 showing, Staten Island Summer is the best new film on the survey, which is doubly impressive when you remember that Elad was ineligible to vote on it. (Fun fact: it is also the highest ranking film that was not seen by all eight participants.)

The only other concensus favorite was Green Room, though The Lobster cracked a few more Top Fifteen lists to take an impressive second place. Both The Guest and The DUFF had equally big showings, though not enough to muster a single super like. Meanwhile Houdini broke his own record with seven straight like votes, easily the longest stretch of enjoyed films for any participant on the survey, even if he does have two films in his Bottom Fifteen this year.

The rough streak continues for The Man, who had three of the bottom four films this year, including a massive failure in Chi-Raq. Again, not only did The Man himself dislike all those films, he even put Chi-Raq in his Bottom Fifteen, so credit where credit is (marginally) due. If you haven't been paying attention (and you haven't), MMZ also put Chi-Raq in his Bottom Fifteen, which will be fun when we get to his list.

Creep was another piece of shit that deserves its place, but the real surprise to me is Unthinkable not doing worse because, uh, that movie fucking sucked. (Fall of the House of Alaay: it was his only film that year.)

Only one more year to go!

Since it was only two weeks out, Elad and Phil had a vague memory of the events that occured and were actually able to vote this year. It's instead Alaay who didn't care enough to vote this time around, especially in the early morning hours when we gave up and let random chance decide our fate. MMZ was less gun shy, handing out seven super dislikes, and then there was Snobhunter, who had an odd string of six movies he liked and five he really, really hated. This is another year where we weren't quite in sync with one another.

That being said, this was also the first time since Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys in Year 5 that all eight candidates decided they liked the same film, giving Everybody Wants Some!! the yearly crown. Coherence came in a respectable second, showing up Triangle for best time loop film of Year 17. I was shocked by the near universal praise for Weiner, clocking in at third place, but it turns out everyone loves some Huma. And while TBP tossed out a lone dislike on account of its lengthy statutory rape plotline, Once Upon a Girl had more fans than critics.

Even though it received three likes and even a Top Fifteen appearance from Houdini, the anti-The Void crowd came out in full force with four Bottom Fifteen appearances. All that support for The Void made a difference, however, as Snobhunter's lone like couldn't keep All Hallows' Eve from winding up as the Worst Film of the Year. Turns out if you put John DeLuca on the cover of a film, he better goddamn not be sidelined for the first hour. And as we end our survey, The House of Alaay has utterfly fallen, with this being his only selection for Year 17 and his second Worst Film of the Year.

The films we turned off did particularly badly this time around: November Rule, Jackie and Picture Perfect amassed some serious negative points while the three-hour trainwreck of The Good, The Bad, the Weird actually received some likes. (One, not surprisingly, from its proposer: The Man.) And though Houdini might have found it endearing, Bon Cop, Bad Cop left a not-bon taste in everyone's mouth.

Stay tuned for Part II when we check to see if this was actually the Worst MovieFest Year of All Time! (It wasn't.)

God those plus/minus arrows are confusing. So because it looks ugly as shit, lemme explain: the number inside shows where the film placed on the 2013 survey. A green circle indicates no change. Everything below the line at the bottom fell out of the Top/Bottom Fifteen list between 2013 and 2017. Got it?

Alaay's lists are always fairly straightforward since he knows how much the guy who writes this things will rip him apart if he screws up. His #1 and #2 favorite are the First and Second Best Film of All Time, respectively, so not much going on there. Otherwise his list strongly focuses on pre-2009 films, with new entries The Lobster and Coherence just barely breaking into the Top 15. As we already know, Con Air and Troll Hunter were big losers this survey, and both fell off his Top Fifteen.

The negatives aren't particularly surprising for Alaay, even if Tampopo rebounded significantly this year in spite of his best efforts. Some post-2013 films snuck on there, but the only one that made a significant impact is his own: Don't Be a Menace. (Though he still carries a torch for the brutality that was 4am Silence of the Lambs, which is otherwise one of his favorite films outside of the realm of MovieFest.)

Despite shitting on him all survey, The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with 8 films.

The Man is also most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with 5 films.

Houdini is neither on his Top nor Bottom Fifteen.

Let the Right One In, Mysterious Skin, and Pieces of April make their only appearance on a Top Fifteen list.

The Silence of the Lambs, Brazil, and 24 Hours in London make their only appearance on a Bottom Fifteen list.

We got some huge shifts in TheBluePlayer's world, and one can only assume these lists greatly benefited from my new "you can see what you super liked/super disliked" model.

Dark City and The King of Kong took a tumble with various others falling out entirely. I've already made fun of The Great Debaters being on a Top Fifteen list, but how about L.A. Confidential being there, a film that almost made TBP fall asleep when we first watched it. The only post-2013 film in his Top Fifteen is Staten Island Summer, which will factor into several lists. Elephant leapt up to his #2, and honestly without that shift it might not have taken Film of the Year that year.

His Bottom Fifteen, meanwhile, is a series of personal grudges as well as 6 post-2013 films, including his new #1: The Void. Also on the list: Black Butterfly, both Dead Snow films, and even a surprising Cyberstalkers, which... what? Meanwhile his previous #1 worse film (Lil' Pimp) is gone entirely.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with 4 films.

The Man is also most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with 7 films.

Everyone is represented between his Top and Bottom Fifteen.

The King of Kong, Timecrimes, and L.A. Confidential make their only appearance on a Top Fifteen list.

Yep. Elad only changed one film in his Top Fifteen, swapping Lep in Space with Dorian Blues. This means he was also the only person not to get off the troll bandwagon, with all three troll films still on his Top Fifteen.

The Bottom Fifteen has more action, though it's largely just a reshuffling of the old list, save another notable example of SLC Punk! being given a reprieve. He gets to hate a little more on action films with Red Dawn and The Expendables and chick-based action films with Bitch Slap and Bandidas, and his only post-2013 film on either lists is The Void, barely eeking in at #15.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with 6 films.

Houdini likewise only had some slight reshuffling, with Leprechaun in the Hood in particular taking a big drop. All of his new Top Fifteen entries are post-2013 films, with Kung Fury in distinguishing itself from the pack. His Top Fifteen lists has a ton of films shared on other people's lists, which is why Glengarry Glen Ross continues to really stand out. (South Park fell off Phil's list so it's only represented by Houdini, but Glengarry has always been Houdini's personal fav.)

Expelled took a similarly big fall in his Bottom Fifteen, with new entries at the coveted #2 and #3 slots, including a re-appearance from Oldboy, which was on his 2009 Bottom Ten but not his 2013 Bottom Fifteen. Also interesting: his #1-4 least favorite films only appear on his own Bottom Fifteen list, a unique feet (unless you're Phil).

And while The Other Boleyn Girl may seem like an odd choice, it has been in his Bottom Fifteen in every survey since 2009.

The MagicMan is one of a kind.

As I vaguely hinted before, MMZ cast only one vote for his entire Bottom Fifteen: Chi-Raq. Due to this extraordinary hatred, I decided to give it a stronger negative point deduction than normal (-1.875 rather than -1.5), though ultimately that bump didn't end up affecting its placement.

{Math Tangent: For those who may be balking at the number, yes, a #1 spot on a Bottom Fifteen list is indeed a whopping -1.5 deduction, but if a film earned that kind of ire than it deserves it. For comparison, a #15 appearance on a Bottom Fifteen list would yield a -0.75 deduction, which is less than an extra dislike vote cast on the film. I may tweak the math for the Bottom/Top Fifteen lists or even drop them entirely next time, but I've got four years to figure that out. For now they are a necessary evil.}

In his Top Fifteen list, his former #1 (Cube) is gone along with a bevy of others, and Black Dynamite waltzed into the #2 spot, continuing its rise this survey. Primer, meanwhile, shifted up 13 places to the 1 slot. His only post-2013 films were Kung Fury and Staten Island Summer, both relatively low. It's possible MMZ benefited the most from being able to actually see his super like selections, as his 2013 results were hilariously inconsistent.

Not much changed for The Man's most favorite films, but after that he showed a lot of love to post-2013 films with five new entries (as well as deciding Rubber deserved a fresh spot). He also hurt the troll cause by dropping both Troll 2 and Troll Hunter.

His Bottom Fifteen also has a few post-2013 films at prominent positions, including his #3 through #5. Frankly his 2013 Bottom Fifteen had some odd selections (I Love You, Philipp Morris?) so these are more palatable replacements aside from the utterly odd Picture Perfect showing up. I guess The Man just really hates Jay Mohr. (He also really hates and continues to really hate Three Colors: White, his least favorite film three surveys in a row and the only person who has ever included it in a Bottom Fifteen or Bottom Ten.)

Anyway, time to shit on The Man by pointing out that - despite mocking him viciously for it last time - his Top Fifteen includes 12 of his own films. Fucking 12. And yes, he did put two of his own films in his Bottom Fifteen (Chi-Raq and Lep: Origins) so maybe throw him a bone? No. Don't throw him a bone. It's too much fun singling him out, although maybe there is actually a worse offender? We're gonna get to that some more in Part II...

Some things to remember from last time: first, Phil didn't submit a Bottom Fifteen for the 2013 survey, so his entire (albeit incomplete) Bottom 12 is new. Also, Phil doesn't believe in the whole "ranking" thing, so these are in no particular order, and points were averaged out and distributed equally.

There's really no point analyzing Phil's decision making as it's so wonderfully unique. You may have noticed a pattern before, but I'm pleased to finally point out that Phil put every single Leprechaun movie on his Bottom Twelve, including even Lep in the Hood. It's almost as though I specifically listed the movies he disliked for him and he ignored my recommendations in order to demonstrate how much he hates those fucking Leprechaun films, which is as good a time as any to point out we've never actually seen Leprechaun 2....

The only weird thing about Phil's Top Fifteen is that at one point An Education was on that list. Otherwise Staten Island Summer and Everybody Wants Some!! are exactly the kinds of movies that deserve to have joined this cultural elite.

Phil is most represented in his Top Fifteen with 7 films.

Eladamri is most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with 5 films, all Leprechaun related.

Crank: High Voltage, Rock 'n' Roll High School, The Break-up Artist, The Big Hit, The Client, The Way of the Gun, The Negotiator, National Lampoon's: Blackball and The Book of Love make their only appearance on a Top Fifteen list.

Leprechaun, Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, and Leprechaun in the Hood make their only appearance on a Bottom Fifteen list.

TBP is not represented between his Top Fifteen and Bottom Twelve.

Films He Proposed in His Top Fifteen: Staten Island Summer, National Lampoon's: Blackball, The Break-up Artist, The Big Hit, The Client, The Negotiator, The Book of Love

With the fall of Donnie Darko come a number of upward shifts, including some big jumps from Princess Mononoke and Oldboy. Like The Man, Snobhunter also showed the new films a lot of love with 5 post-2013 entries, though as has been a theme, they were mostly in the back half. The newer films just didn't seem to have what it takes to break into anyone's most favorite films, even if they did have some wider appeal.

His Bottom Fifteen is a total redecoration thanks to a bundle of post-2013 films, including his new #1 and #2. Dorian Blues went from that #2 spot to totally out of the running, and most of his new Bottom Fifteen is simply making room for some fresh faces. I don't know why Jackie is there.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with 7 films.

The Man and MMZ are most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with 3 films each.

Everyone is represented between his Top and Bottom Fifteen.

Once and Green Room make their only appearance on a Top Fifteen list.

Ronin, Jackie, A Very Long Engagement, Sharknado 2: The Second One, Roman Holiday, Genesis, Lil' Pimp, and The Bling Ring make their only appearance on a Bottom Fifteen list.

Observations

So what can we say about these results? I'll be saving discussion of individual years and participants for Part II, though I think Snobhunter deserves some recognition for having the #1 and #2 overall selection, which also happen to be the only films in this survey to break the 10.00 mark. The Man is also all over the top of the All Time list, and we'll see what fate holds for these two in the next section.

As for the actual results, there aren't too many surprises when we look at the new entrants, though I'll admit I find it odd that Kung Fury lost out to Staten Island Summer, which seems like a strong, but not necessarily Top 10-worthy candidate. Just outside of the Top 10 come Everybody Wants Some!! and The Lobster, and again Everybody Wants Some!! placed way higher than I would have anticipated. Aside from the new films, the biggest shift came from Primer, leaping from 28th place in 2013 to 5th in 2017. On the opposite side of that coin is the precipitious downfall of Battle Royale, from #1 in 2009 to #19 in 2017, shedding nearly half its points in the process. (Troll 2 going from #11 to #30 is also pretty significant.)

Worth noting are that three films from Year 10 managed to make it on to the Top 10, with no other year coming even close to such a feat. (Year 16 had Staten Island Summer, The Lobster, and Green Room in the Top 20 and Year 12 had Drive at #2 and Kaboom at #15, but neither is quite comparable.) As mentioned when it came up, Best Worst Movie is Year 11's entrance into the list way down at #39, which... yikes. And to circle back to Year 10, it also had the #26, #27, #30, and #32 film, so all around a pretty fucking good showing.

Because so few post-2013 films made it into Top Fifteen lists, a lot of the higher films from the last four years did so by virtue of strong yearly performances. If you were to sort the table above by the Yearly Pts column you would find that Staten Island Summer, Green Room, and Everybody Wants Some!! would all be in our Top 5 if we factored out the Top Fifteen lists. Conversely, if you were to only sort by Top Fifteen lists, Kung Fury would be the lone film to make the Top 10.

MMZ hasn't made much movement when you look at the bottom of the chart, with five films in the Bottom 10 and the entire bottom three. The only non-MMZ film to break into the Bottom 5 was also the worst-performing post-2013 film: Chi-Raq. While new films shifted in, the only person who made any improvement related to getting out of the cellar was Houdini, who went from having Lil' Pimp as his worst film in 2013 at - #11 to Bitch Slap this year at - #23. Meanwhile Alaay has two big brand new eyesores with Don't Be a Menace and All Hallows' Eve, and Snobby has a new worst film in The Void.

If we were to factor out Bottom Fifteen lists, both Fronterz and From Dusk Till Dawn 2 would break into the Bottom 10. And if you sort only by Bottom Fifteen lists, Chi-Raq actually did worse than Gia.

That's enough chatter for now. Join us in part two where we break down the individual users and voters.

But first, for those curious:

Teen Beach Movie 5.52
Staten Island Summer 9.29
All Hallows' Eve -6.54
TOTAL 8.27 (or 2.76 avg)

DeLuca is batting a South Park (2.76) average out there, which is pretty darn good when you factor in how badly All Hallows did. We'll see what the next four years bring for our intrepid hero.
