Difference Between Year-By-Year Lists and Top Ten Lists MovieFest Ranking Results

This is a long article, so I'll try to keep the intro short.

1.) Whenever you see an asterisk (*), it indicates a selection that doesn't make any sense. This is for Phil, who... well, let's just say there's a reason they don't recommend drinking in the middle of the day.

2.) Scoring is as follows: 1st place = 1.00, 2nd place = 0.75, 3rd place = 0.50. A running theme of this survey is trying not to make the point gap between picks too outrageous, so I used a x2 difference between first and last place instead of x3. Obviously the scoring system I use influences the results, but I feel this is a fair system.

3.) Scoring is subtracted in the least-favorites category.

4.) Tiebreakers were determined by how many positive votes were cast. If there were no positive votes, then the pick with the fewest number of negative votes wins. If neither than it's a regular boring tie.

Results:

* - Phil and TBP both chose not to submit a full bottom three this year, thus the uneven total between positive and negative points.

Cube just barely edged out Con Air to take the #1 spot, though it's more legitimate of a win when you factor in that neither TBP nor Elad was even there to see Cube, meaning it had less potential positive votes.

Yellow Submarine makes its only appearance and is able to edge out Spinal Tap thanks to Phil's negative vote against the latter. Phil will prove to be somewhat contrary throughout this survey.

Also contrary this year: Alaay, whose negative vote for Pulp Fiction pushed it to just above the 0.00 line and his negative vote for Silence of the Lambs actually knocked it into the red. Get Shorty managed to break even, and as you'll discover throughout this survey, the break-even films are generally close to the upper 1/3rd, demonstrating the group's habit of spreading out the negative votes.

There wasn't too much zaniness in the red zone other than TM's positive vote for SLC Punk! keeping it from taking the overall worst slot. Despite intentionally only seeing 20 minutes of it – and my memory of that twenty minutes being fairly engaging – Saving Private Ryan took home four negative votes (the most for the year) and the coveted Worse Film of the Year award. I would argue that most people forgot their viewing experience of Saving Private Ryan and voted purely on seeing the (partial) next to it, thus assuming it must have been bad or we wouldn't have turned it off, but... hey, maybe not. Maybe you all legitimately thought it was a bad film. And so it goes....

Best Film of the Year: Cube

Worse Film of the Year: Saving Private Ryan

Missed a Break: Con Air – 0.50 off the top spot.

Got Lucky: SLC Punk! – TM saved it.

Mr. Forgettable: None.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Whether Cube gets more selections than Con Air and how many more lists SLC Punk! shows up on than Saving Private Ryan (hint: SPR makes no one's bottom ten).

* - Of Phil's first-least-favorite and second-least-favorite vote, both of which were for the same film, I only factored in the first-least-favorite, thus the uneven total between positive and negative points.

Look at that clusterfuck at the top. With only a 0.75 (a #2 vote) difference between the first and fourth pick, this is an indication of a year with a lot of strong candidates. Even though Lep in the Hood received fewer votes than either Run Lola Run or Donnie Darko (3 compared to 4 and 5, respectively), they were for more positive points, giving Lep the edge. (DD technically has the most positive points for the year (+4.00) before you factor out the two negative votes against it.) I gave the tiebreaker to Run Lola Run because it didn't have any negative votes. Dark City takes a surprising fifth place because of the votes against it. Phil (remember how I said he was contrary?) kept Donnie Darko out of the #1 spot and Dark City out of the top three.

Also interesting: South Park way down at #7 with only one vote.

In the negative zone, Phil continues to make things interesting by using all of his positive votes to keep The Big Hit, How High, and The Way of the Gun from falling further in the red (where they frankly belong). Anywhere But Here was savaged with three negative votes (two #1 worst picks) and even Elad's support couldn't keep his chaos-game film from falling fairly low.

Fear and Loathing is a real surprise for me, only because we watched less than fifteen minutes of it and I don't recall anyone even being there. I thought Ronin was the sure loser this time out, but with only Snobby putting it as his #1 worst, Fear and Loathing takes the cake.

Best Film of the Year: Leprechaun in the Hood by a squeeker.

Worse Film of the Year: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Missed a Break: Donnie Darko, the receiver of the most positive points for the year.

Got Lucky: Leprechaun in the Hood, which took the #1 spot with only three positive votes (the lowest amount of any Best Film of the Year winner). Additionally, it's 2.75 point total is the worse overall for the Film of the Year and a solid 1.00 pts below Cube, the next worse competitor.

Mr. Forgettable: From Hell, with no votes.

Things to Look For in the Overall Top and Bottom Ten Lists: Four of the top five picks appear in different people's Top Ten lists, but which one will get the most points when everything is factored in? Also keep an eye on South Park, which only received one vote for the year... how many top tens did it slip into?

* - Bafflingly, Phil selected One Day In September as his second-favorite, second-least-favorite, and third-least-favorite film. Do to positioning of the answers on the survey and Phil's predeliction for campus comedies, I'm willing to assume he actually intended to pick PCU as his #2 favorite, and am confident enough in that decision to change his answer for him. Of the two negative votes, I only used one for scoring purposes (the highest).

A bit of a shocker here, as From Dusk Til Dawn is a fairly iconic film, yet it only barely took the lead from Y Tu Mama Tambien (which had more votes (6) than Dusk (5)). Dusk won out by being the #1 pick for four different people, which is a type of firepower that Y Tu Mama coudln't handle. PCU rounds out the top three with 3.50 pts, the most of any third-place film.

There are a few films straddling the green. Despite using their #1 worst pick on Transformers (MMZ) and Three Colors: White (TM), both films manage to make it into the positives. Phil kept L.A. Confidential alive by giving it his #1 vote, further solidifying my opinion that he did all his voting based on non-MovieFest-related viewings. Honestly, the movie was a trainwreck when we watched it during the Fest.

There isn't so much ambiguity when you enter the red zone, with the first negative film, Very Bad Things at a serious -1.75. Fletch surprisingly made it on half of the bottom three lists with -2.50; Sucka is less of a shocker. The final surprise of Year Three isn't that Gia took last place – the surprise is that someone (Phil) didn't have it in his bottom three.

Best Film of the Year: From Dusk Till Dawn by the slimmest margin of any Film of the Year.

Worse Film of the Year: Gia, whose -5.75 is a whole -1.00 worse than the second-closest competitor overall (before factoring in top and bottom ten lists).

Missed a Break: Y Tu Mama Tambien, by a single third-place vote.

Got Lucky: L.A. Confidential, as deserving of a red candidate as I've ever seen.

Mr. Forgettable: The Faculty and Leprechaun 3.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Will the margin between From Dusk Till Dawn and Y Tu Mama still be close when we hit the top 10's? And does Gia have what it takes to win the mantel of Worst Film Ever?

* - I felt like pointing out that Phil didn't mess up this year.

The Virgin Suicides jumped out to an immediate lead. The +3.50 point difference between it and The Warriors is the biggest gap of any two films. Interestingly enough, it's Houdini this time who is the only person not to put it in his top three. There isn't much contention outside of Suicides, with reasonable showings for The Warriors and Mean Guns.

Timecop accrued four votes and split exactly down the middle for a 0.00 average. Right below it is probably one of the more interesting showing of the year in Princess Mononoke, which received five total votes – three of them positive – and still came out in the red.

Alaay and Phil used their #1 votes to pull down 24 Hours In London and Dusk Till Dawn 2, respectively, though Gamera 3 – despite being on for less than ten minutes – managed to edge them both out with two #2 votes from TBP and Snobby.

Cat Ballou really surprised me in the bottom slot, only because I can't imagine anyone was actually watching it (being the chaos movie). Chaos movies in general didn't do that well this survey, factoring in Anywhere But Here from earlier and another #1 worse film to show up later on. Much more interesting to me was the battle for second-worse spot, with Scorched losing the tiebreaker because it had four negative votes to Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood's three.

Best Film of the Year: The Virgin Suicides by a mile.

Worse Film of the Year: Cat Ballou with three #1 votes against it.

Missed a Break: Princess Mononoke, falling in the red despite three positive votes.

Got Lucky: Malibooty, which Phil (again) saved from taking the second-worse slot.

Mr. Forgettable: Nothing this year.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Scorched might have edged out Lep: Back 2 tha Hood here, but how did they stack up in the bottom tens? And did Cat Ballou's three worse-place votes translate into bottom ten appearances? On the flip side, how many Top Ten lists did the #2 (The Warriors) and the #3 (Mean Guns) sneak onto? (Hint: one of them didn't.)

* - For whatever reason, Phil decided not to submit a complete bottom three this year, thus the uneven total between positive and negative votes.

One of the things I most looked forward to with this survey was the slugfest between Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and Pieces of April – somewhat surprisingly, Dangerous Lives won by a hefty margin, factoring into all eight top three lists (and falling no farther than #2 on any of those lists).

Not much doing outside of those two. Chasing Liberty baffingly figured into four #3 picks and Blackball – despite Snobby's vote against – wound up fourth overall. (Anyone notice a pattern of Phil primarily voting for his own picks?) Also shocking was La Femme Nikita in the positives, which was the infamous "knock knock" movie.

Over in the reds we have a Princess Mononoke situation with Human Nature – two positive votes, two negative votes, and a final score of -0.25. Repo Man's only negative vote for the year also happened to be Phil's only negative vote for the year.

And finally the epic battle of Urbania, Out On Parole, and Divorce: Italian Style. Divorce managed to snag -4.75 on six different bottom three lists (pretty impressive when you remember Phil cast his only negative vote for Repo Man, meaning Houdini was the only other person not to have it in his bottom three). It says something about the plethora of bad films in Year Five when Urbania takes a distant third-worse film.

Best Film of the Year: Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, the only film on this survey to factor into all eight member's lists.

Worse Film of the Year: Divorce: Italian Style.

Missed a Break: Human Nature, just one third-place vote from the green.

Got Lucky: Urbania.

Mr. Forgettable: Gossip and Crimson Rivers.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Pieces of April may have lost out this year, but how did it do against Dangerous Lives in the top ten race? How did Urbania, Out On Parole, and Divorce: Italian Style factor into the top tens, and were they enough to drag Year Five into the bottom of the overall MovieFest rankings?

Results:

* - Though contrary to the point of this survey – which was to evaluate films based on their MovieFest experience rather than prior or subsequent viewings – I allowed Phil's vote for Man of the House to be counted in this particular and rare instance. Future votes for films not actually seen during MovieFest were ignored.

* - After discussing with TBP, we agreed that Elad could not have seen Fronterz as he was searching for Yellow Submarine at the time. He most likely mistook it for Out On Parole. His vote has been discounted. (It did not affect overall position in these standings.)

Not a lot of surprise here. Battle Royale was wicked hyped up and still lived up to expectations. The only real shocker is 11:14 squeaking its way by The Squid and the Whale, which only made it onto four of the seven ballots (with two #1 votes). Battle Royale, meanwhile, had four #1 votes but only one other vote (Snobby's #3) to its credit. Man of the House did nicely for itself with four votes and a hefty lead over the fifth place spot.

A lot of scattered votes in the red zone, the highlight being Snobby's hatred of Genesis casting it below the other scrubs. The Gingerdead Man made three appearances on three different bottom three lists, all in third place, to just pass by Genesis.

I'm a bit surprised by the hatred for Fronterz. If Elad's vote had been counted it would have only had a 0.25 difference between it and Coffee and Cigarettes, which is preposterous given that Fronterz was on for fifteen minutes max. The unbearable Wrath of Khan might have done far worse if Elad and TBP had been there to see all of it instead of just the tail end.

Best Film of the Year: Battle Royale.

Worse Film of the Year: Coffee and Cigarettes.

Missed a Break: A Very Long Engagement – take away The Man's negative vote and it would leapfrog all the way to #5.

Got Lucky: Fronterz having Elad's vote nulled.

Mr. Forgettable: What a Girl Wants.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Battle Royale had a decent lead here, but how did they stack up on the Top Ten lists compared to the #2-4 spots (all but one made it onto at least two lists)? How many bottom ten lists did Fronterz make it into compared to Coffee and Cigarettes? How about Wrath of Khan?

* - Again, for whatever reason, Phil decided not to submit a bottom three this year, thus the uneven total between positive and negative votes.

Another anticipated slugfest was between Elephant and Mysterious Skin, and despite each gathering five votes, Elephant was the clear winner with three #1's to Mysterious Skin's one. Outside of that it was a pretty heated competition for third place, with Dorm Days 2 being held off of the third-place ranking on account of The Man's unusual #1 worse pick against it. No surprise that I – who put it as his #1 – thought the film wasn't remotely worth a -1.00 vote (remember the boat, the play, the monkey!!!).

Oldboy is probably the most interesting of all the films to keep an eye on, as it factored into five lists, all of them at the #2 spot (three positives, two negatives). Also delightful is the stalemate between Snobby's #1 best pick and TBP's #1 worse pick resulting in a 0.00 rating for The OH in Ohio.

The red zone is littered with scrubs pretty much up into the second-worse spot, the highlight being The Guru with three third-worse-place votes and me continuing to bear a torch against The Baxter. I'll be honest, I'm a little surprised Farce of the Penguins was so savaged. I didn't expect movies that we turned off to gather so many negative votes, but as Saving Private Ryan, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Fronterz all show, you can't underestimate the negative bump that comes from a (partial) attached to a film.

Best Film of the Year: Elephant.

Worse Film of the Year: Farce of the Penguins.

Missed a Break: Dorm Days 2, which could have really shined if not for The Man.

Got Lucky: Oldboy, intriguingly absent from Alaay, originally its greatest critic's, list.

Mr. Forgettable: None.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Will Elephant hold onto its edge over Mysterious Skin going into the top tens? Will Oldboy continue to set at opposite ends of the poles in the bottom and top ten lists? Was Farce of the Penguins bad enough to crack some bottom ten lists?

* - Phil's votes for Black Sheep and The Story of the Weeping Camel were ignored because he wasn't there to see either of them. The point of this survey was to evaluate films based on the MovieFest experience, not any prior or subsequent viewings of a film.

I look at Year Eight and am a bit surprised by the weakness outside of Crank. This year is full of unusual choices, many of them directly contradicting later top and bottom ten picks; I have a feeling if there were a do-over, Year Eight would look much different. Glengarry, Glen Ross did better than I had expected cracking three top three lists but almost as shocking are the two #1 picks for Sad Movie, good enough to raise it to the third spot overall. Elad certainly surprised me by picking 2 Days In Paris as his #1 favorite and Tampopo as his #3. (Tampopo is the only bottom film to receive a positive vote.)

Pumpkin had an interesting battle resulting in a -0.25 total and Houdini's #2 vote for Black Sheep kept it from falling farther into the red. TBP surprised me a little with his #1 worse pick going to The Chumscrubber, a reasonably serviceable film.

The Story of the Weeping Camel somehow only registers two negative votes (albeit both as the #1 worse) and the forgettable Death at a Funeral factors into five bottom three lists, coming just 0.25 points shy of passing Tampopo through a tiebreaker. For a film that received three -1.00 votes, it's a shock that Tampopo came that close to being unseated.

Best Film of the Year: Crank – no contest.

Worse Film of the Year: Tampopo by the skin of its teeth.

Missed a Break: Pumpkin, just one third-place vote shy of reaching the green.

Got Lucky: Black Sheep, sort of.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Watch for Glengarry, Glen Ross – it might surprise you how many top and bottom ten lists it falls into. Will Sad Movie's two #1 votes translate into top tens? Will Tampopo continue to tread water or sink in the bottom ten lists? Death at the Funeral figured into five bottom three lists, but did people come to their senses and turn on Weeping Camel when it came down to the big vote?

Not much surprise with the winner here, as Dr. Horrible was a massively successful pick absent from only MMZ's top three. Let the Right One In isn't much of a surprise either, as that was a fairly engaging film throughout. Not a lot of love for Wendy and Lucy and You and Me and Everyone We Know, though (with the latter being held back by Houdini).

More scrubs fill out the middle-to-bottom of the list with Elad saving Repo! from falling farther than 13th place. Almost a real shocker at the bottom of the list with Who Made the Potato Salad? being only one third-place vote away from beating Brazil in the tiebreaker. Brazil's three -1.00 votes were enough to anchor it in the bottom though.

Best Film of the Year: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

Worse Film of the Year: Brazil – barely.

Missed a Break: Nothing.

Got Lucky: Repo!, saved from falling below -2.00.

Mr. Forgettable: None this year.

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Does Dr. Horrible have a strong enough appeal to translate into top ten lists? What about Let the Right One In, featured on four top three lists? And can Who Made the Potato Salad? eclipse Brazil when the bottom tens are factored in?

* * * * *

We're about to find out!

Next comes the Top Ten list for each member. Point values were altered slightly so that the distinction between a first- and tenth-place pick wasn't such a huge gap in value. They are as follows:

10th place = 1.00 pts
9th place = 1.40 pts (+0.40)
8th place = 1.80 pts (+0.40)
7th place = 2.20 pts (+0.40)
6th place = 2.60 pts (+0.40)
5th place = 3.00 pts (+0.40)
4th place = 3.40 pts (+0.40)
3rd place = 3.90 pts (+0.50)
2nd place = 4.40 pts (+0.50)
1st place = 5.00 pts (+0.60)

And then, just to confuse you some more, the Top Ten points are divided in half so that they don't dwarf the point totals accrued from the top and bottom three lists for each year. Again I reiterate, my scoring system influences the final results, but I feel a x5 value between the first- and tenth-place pick is more reasonable than a x10 one. This system gives a slight point increase to the top three films as those are the cream of the crop. This also gives more value to films selected by more than one member (since the starting value is 1.00).

I should mention, before we begin, that the Top/Bottom Ten lists didn't always match up to the top and bottom selections for each year that you just perused. This is somewhat understandable given that certain films change in their regard when taken out of the context of the year, but I still tried to note any discrepencies when applicable. It's up to you to decide whether it's reasonable to have a film on your Top Ten that didn't factor into the top three for the year it premiered.

ALL-TIME BOTTOM AND TOP TEN LISTS

Alaay
TOP TEN BOTTOM TEN
01.) Donnie Darko 01.) Out On Parole
02.) Crank 02.) Tampopo
03.) Battle Royale 03.) Brazil
04.) Let the Right One In 04.) Coffee and Cigarettes
05.) The Virgin Suicides 05.) I'm Gonna Git You Sucka
06.) The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys 06.) Gia

08.) Yellow Submarine 08.) Urbania
09.) Pieces of April 09.) 24 Hours In London
10.) PCU 10.) The Baxter

Results:

The polemical Donnie Darko took the #1 spot here, though it'll show up on four more lists to come. Alaay mostly stuck with popular picks; his second-place selection of Crank was the highest that film made it on any top ten (it features in two other lists, albeit much lower).

This is the only appearance of Let the Right One In on a Top or Bottom Ten list.

On the negative side, Alaay was the only person to put Out On Parole at #1, though three other people put it on their Bottom Ten. Tampopo, his #2, makes its only Bottom Ten appearance, as does The Baxter and 24 Hours In London.

Alaay is the only person to put a Phil selection as his #1 overall least favorite.

The only movie he proposed that made either of his lists was Let the Right One In.

09.) Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys 09.) The OH in Ohio
10.) Crank 10.) Farce of the Penguins

Results:

TheBluePlayer went with the popular Lep in the Hood as his #1, though more interesting is Dark City as his #2. (Remember: Dark City came in fifth place in Year Two.)

Repo!, TBP's #1 worse film, only made it into one other list (Alaay's). The same can be said for Cat Ballou and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

TBP's bottom ten features seven of the nine Worse Film of the Year winners (the most of any member).

He is the only person to put a The Man selection as his overall #1 least favorite.

The only movie he proposed that made either of his lists was Battle Royale.

10.) PCU 10.) Urbania

Results:

Like TBP, Elad picked Leprechaun in the Hood as his #1 pick; this is the only time two people shared a #1 pick. Yellow Submarine makes its final (and highest) appearance on a top ten list at #3.

Elad is the only person to have The Squid and the Whale on his top ten list.

Not much surprise in the red zone. His #2 and #3 worse films were both from Year Three. His entire bottom three from Year Five made it into his Overall Bottom Ten (though Out On Parole passed Urbania). Despite not putting The Story of the Weeping Camel in his bottom three for Year Eight, it appears as the #9 worse movie overall on his Bottom Ten.

Movies he proposed that made his Top Ten were Leprechaun in the Hood, The Squid and the Whale, and Elephant. Movies he proposed that made his Bottom Ten were Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood and The Story of the Weeping Camel.

Houdini's #1 favorite, Battle Royale, appears in four other Top Ten lists (tied with The Virgin Suicides for most appearances on a Top Ten). Despite being behind Mean Guns in his top three for Year Four, The Warriors and Princess Mononoke both make Houdini's Top Ten. His Top Ten features his entire top three from Year Two.

Houdini is the only person to put Princess Mononoke on a Top Ten.
Houdini's #1 worse movie of all time, Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, figures into two other lists (including Elad's).

Malibu's Most Wanted, Malibooty, Human Nature, Anywhere But Here, and Very Bad Things (half of his Bottom Ten) make their only appearance on a Bottom Ten list.

His bottom ten features only one of the Worse Films of the Year (the least of any member).

The only movie he proposed that made either of his lists was South Park.

MMZ's list might seem reasonable at first, but when you go back and compare it to his top threes for all the past years you see a bundle of inaccuracies.

Dark City was higher than Donnie Darko on his top three for Year Two, but significantly below it on his Top Ten.

The unusual Smokin' Aces took the #1 spot in Year Seven over Oldboy, though the latter was the only one to make his Top Ten.

And then there's Year Eight: Crank, which was above 2 Days In Paris in his top three, does not make his Top Ten list and Tampopo – which didn't make the top three at all that year – places in his Top Ten as well. The Story of the Weeping Camel – his #1 worse film overall – did not make his bottom three for Year Eight either.

MMZ's #2 overall worse film – Who Made the Potato Salad? – was his third-place selection in Year Nine, behind Brazil, his ninth overall on his Bottom Ten.

Despite not appearing in his bottom three for Year Eight, Glengarry, Glen Ross takes fourth place on his Bottom Ten.

There are probably other inaccuracies. In MMZ's defense, however, he did the two parts of his survey several days apart and did not have access to any of his top and bottom three selections at the time.

This Is Spinal Tap, Tampopo, 2 Days In Paris, Cecil B. Demented, and Oldboy make their only appearance on a Top Ten list.

The Way of the Gun, From Dusk Till Dawn 2, The Big Hit, and Glengarry, Glen Ross make their only appearance on a Bottom Ten list.

Movies he proposed that made his Top Ten were Tampopo and 2 Days In Paris. Movies he proposed that made his Bottom Ten were Gia and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Results:

For the most part, The Man's favorites are right in line with the top vote-getters with one exception: this is The Fall's only appearance on a top ten list – interestly, The Man did not include it on his top three favorites for Year Nine.

Run Lola Run and Donnie Darko switch positions between his top three for Year Two and his Top Ten list.

Neither of the two sets of showdown films: Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys vs. Pieces of April or Elephant vs. Mysterious Skin appear on The Man's list.

On the negative side, this is White's only appearance on any top ten list, making its debut as TM's #1. The rest of his selections are more in the norm with the exception of Expelled, which is also making its only appearance on a top ten list.

Movies he proposed that made his Top Ten were From Dusk Til Dawn, Cube, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Fall, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Donnie Darko (*cough* boosting his own stats *cough*). No movies he proposed made his Bottom Ten.

Phil did indeed choose not to fill out picks #4-#10 on his Bottom Ten.

Phil did indeed put Everyone Says I Love You is his #2 least favorite of all time despite it not appearing on his bottom three for Year Five.

Despite neither of them appearing in his top three for Year Two, Run Lola Run takes the #4 overall best film spot and South Park takes both the #8 and #9 spot. (Only the #8 was counted for voting purposes.)

Despite being below From Dusk Till Dawn 2 in Year Five, Princess Mononoke takes the overall third worse film on Phil's Bottom Ten.

Despite not having a bottom three for Year Seven, Farce of the Penguins takes Phil's overall worse film spot.

The Big Hit, American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, Get Shorty, and National Lampoon's: Blackball make their only appearance in a Top Ten list.

Everyone Says I Love You and Princess Mononoke make their only appearance on a Bottom Ten list.

Phil's is the only Bottom Ten list not to include Gia.

Movies he proposed that made his Top Ten were The Big Hit, Man of the House, and National Lampoon's: Blackball (The Naked Mile is credited as a group pick). No movies he proposed made his Bottom Ten.

Snobhunter is the only person to have each of his Top Ten picks appear in at least one other member's Top Ten.

Ronin, L.A. Confidential, Red Dawn, The Wrath of Khan, Oldboy, Genesis, and Cecil B. Demented make their only appearance in a Bottom Ten.

The only movies he proposed that made either of his lists were The Virgin Suicides and Oldboy.

Things You Were Supposed to Be Looking For in the Top and Bottom Ten Lists:

Year One:

Despite being close to Cube in Year One, Con Air made zero appearances on any Top Ten. Cube made three for +5.55 point bump.

And though Saving Private Ryan took the Worse Film spot for Year One, SLC Punk! appeared on two Bottom Ten lists to SPV's none, giving it a -2 pt drop.

Year Two:

Leprechaun in the Hood --> 4 Top Ten appearances for a +8.5 increase.

Run Lola Run --> 2 Top Ten appearances for a +2.6 increase.

Donnie Darko --> 4 Top Ten appearances for a +7.6 increase.

Maverick --> No appearance.

Dark City --> 3 Top Ten appearances for a +5.6 increase.

These results aren't so surprising when we factor in how beloved Donnie Darko and Dark City are. Not surprisingly, they did better when they didn't have to stave off negative votes.

The South Park movie also did well with a +2.2 pt increase.

Year Three:

Though very close to From Dusk Till Dawn originally, Y Tu Mama Tambien only managed to sink in two appearances for a +2.2 pt bump. Compared to From Dusk Till Dawn's four appearances and +7.55 pt bump, the real winner is clear.

Gia managed to appear on seven Bottom Ten lists taking a ludicrous -11.85 pt drop. No other film accrued nearly as many negative points. (The next closest is Coffee and Cigarettes with an -8.35 drop.)

Year Four:

Despite beating out Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood in Year Four, Scorched made it on to exactly zero Bottom Tens compared to Lep's three appearances and -5.7 drop off. Cat Ballou only appeared on two Botton Ten lists for a -2.2 drop, handing over the mantel of Stinker of 2004 to Lep: Back 2 tha Hood.

Mean Guns made it onto zero Top Ten lists. The Warriors snuck onto one for a +1.5 point increase.

Year Five:

Pieces of April --> 3 appearances for a +2.7 pt bump.

Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys --> 4 appearances for a +4.2 pt bump, increasing its sizeable lead.

Urbania --> 3 appearances for a -3.6 drop.

Out On Parole --> 4 appearances for a -6 pt drop.

Divorce: Italian Style --> 3 appearances for a -5.15 drop. Out On Parole inched closer, but couldn't usurp the true worse film of Year Five.

Year Six:

Battle Royale --> 5 appearances for a +9.7 bump (the largest increase of any film from a Top Ten bump)

11:14 --> 3 appearances for a +4.7 bump.

The Squid and the Whale --> 1 appearance for a +1.3 bump.

Man of the House --> 2 appearances for a +2.8 bump, passing over The Squid and the Whale for third-best film of Year Six.

On the negative side, Fronterz made it into zero Bottom Ten lists; Wrath of Khan only made it into one (for a -0.50 drop). Coffee and Cigarettes, however, significantly widened its control over the Worse Film of Year Six by appearing on four Bottom Tens for a -8.35 drop.

Year Seven:

Elephant --> 3 appearances for a +3.3 bump (the smallest increase for any Best Film of the Year contender).

Mysterious Skin --> No appearance, and Elephant increases its lead.

Farce of the Penguins indeeds continues its plummet by making it on four Bottom Ten lists and dropping -5.8 pts.

Year Eight:

Glengarry, Glen Ross actually ends up losing -0.3 points after appearing on three lists.

Sad Movie sneaks into MMZ's Top Ten for a +1.7 increase.

MMZ bails out Tampopo after Alaay casts it as his second worse film, resulting in a mere -0.9 drop.

Despite appearing on five bottom three lists for Year Eight, Death at a Funeral does not make an appearance on anyone's Bottom Ten.

The Story of the Weeping Camel – which had only made it onto two bottom three lists for Year Eight (not counting Phil's) – somehow shows up on four Bottom Ten lists and drops -6.4 points, easily eclipsing Tampopo for Worse Film of 2008.

Year Nine:

Dr. Horrible makes it on three lists for a respectable +3.5 increase.

Despite being on four top three lists for Year Nine, Let the Right One In adds a paltry +1.7 points with one Top Ten appearance.

Who Made the Potato Salad? appears on a single Bottom Ten list (MMZ's) for a -2.2 drop; compared to Brazil's -4.35 drop from three appearances, Brazil easily holds onto its control of Worse Film of 2009.

The only movies to factor into both a Top Ten and a Bottom Ten list were Cecil B. Demented, Glengarry, Glen Ross, Oldboy, Princess Mononoke, Tampopo, The Big Hit, and The Way of the Gun.

Much rather than continue year-by-year analysis, I'm going to move on to the big hurrah. I took the total points for everything from all parts of the survey and cobbled them together into this megasized list. Now naturally this isn't the fairest system, of course, because it favors movies that everyone has seen. (Years One, Six, Eight, and Nine have a disadvantage since not everyone was present.) I'm not too worried about this, though, as that's just how these things work out – people have to see it in order to get votes.

Anyway, I present to you the final list for greatest and worst MovieFest films.

Well there you have it, folks. Battle Royale on one end, Gia on the other. And while it was a real squeaker in the top five, Gia had virtually no challenge at the bottom. Year Seven doesn't have a movie until Elephant at the #11 spot. Year Five, meanwhile, has the fourth and fifth worse films overall.

There's a lot of data in this last chart. Personally I feel it's best if you peruse it at your leisure. But don't worry – Part One isn't over yet.

Finally we come to the ranking of the years. After thinking for hours upon hours of a reasonable way to rank the years, I finally settled on something fairly simple: I broke everything down to single integers (first place = 1, ninth = 9), assigned values, added the values together, and then divided by the number of people who were there that year. While that probably isn't the best way to do it, the numbers I got were reasonable enough for me to use them as a final list.

I originally thought Year Two would be the easy #1 pick for all involved, and aside from Elad (6th place) and TBP (4th place), it mostly was. Not for nothing does Year Two have two of the top six overall picks in Lep in the Hood (11.25 pts) and Donnie Darko (9.85 pts), not to mention Dark City (7.1 pts) and Run Lola Run (4.85 pts). On the other side of the coin is Ronin (-4.95 pts), but that doesn't even fall into the bottom fifteen overall. So yeah, Year Two is pretty good.

Outside of that it does get a little tricky. Year Six seems like a reasonable second-best-Fest on account of having the #1 overall movie in Battle Royale (14.2 pts), not to mention 11:14 (8.45) and Man of the House (5.3). Detractors might point out Coffee and Cigarettes (-12.85) ranked at an embarassing 134nd overall, but after that you don't get a Sixth Year film until Fronterz/Wrath of Khan (-3.25) tied at 112th overall. That's a jump of nearly twenty films between the first- and second-worse film of Year Six, and certainly nothing to shrug at.

After that there's a bit of a cluster with Year Four, Three, and Seven. Four has Virgin Suicides (12.4) and not much else until The Warriors (4.5) ~ that's a hefty point gap between your first- and second-best films, but despite not gathering many points, we still have a soft spot for Lep 4: In Space (0.50) and Mean Guns (2.5), both better than their numbers indicate.

Year Three has both From Dusk Til Dawn (12.05) and Y Tu Mama (6.45), but is hampered by Gia (-17.6) and a pretty mediocre morning of Three Colors: White, L.A. Confidential, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Fletch, and The Faculty. Even adding in PCU, Year Three is underwhelming and a surprise at third best overall.

Year Seven sits right in the middle. Elephant (7.55) and Mysterious Skin (3) should both have more points than they do, but even so there's not a whole lot to recommend Year Seven. Aside from Farce of the Penguins (-10.55) it really doesn't have much that was irksome – though, by the same token, it doesn't have much that's any good either. A forgettable year if ever there was one.

Year One surprises me being this high. Maybe it's just my memory playing tricks on me; after all, Year One does have three films in the top twenty five (and This Is Spinal Tap at #27). And let's face it, was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas really worthy of 10th worse overall? I imagine Snobby with his #5 worse film overall selection would argue that yes, Fear and Loathing was that bad. The real key to Year One's success was the questionable decision on TM and MMZ's part to give it their first place vote. Alaay (8th place), Elad (9th place), and Houdini (7th place) don't exactly see eye-to-eye with that call, but I suppose it's hard for anyone to be judicious when you're ten years removed.

Year Nine, while fresh, didn't have much that stood out aside from Dr. Horrible (9.00). Yes, Let the Right One In (4.7) technically cracked the top twenty, but even I'm hardpressed to argue that it deserves it over Con Air or Mysterious Skin (two films that just missed the cut off). Time will probably wipe away the foul taste of Who Made the Potato Salad? (-5.95), but don't expect Year Nine to be viewed with the fondness of Year Two.

And what makes Year Eight so bad? The instant answer is Tampopo (-4.9), though The Story of the Weeping Camel (-8.4) clocked in much lower pointswise. As we've seen with the more mediocre festivals, they usually only have one stand-out film – in this case Crank (8.4) – and a bunch of middling, decent films. Not much substance.

And then there's Year Five, just a hairsbreadth worse than Year Eight according to my shifty math. On the surface Year Eight seems like a powerhouse with both Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (10.95) and Pieces of April (7.2), but even though people didn't vote with the final numbers in front of them, they didn't need statistics to know that Divorce: Italian Style (-9.9), Out On Parole (-9.75), and Urbania (-6.6) don't make for the greatest festival. This was simply a matter of having too many bombs, and with only Phil willing to put it in his top half (he ranked it fourth overall), Year Five doesn't exactly come with a ringing endorsement.

Interestingly, MMZ felt that the best year was Year One and we've been getting progressively worse since. Maybe we are.

Maybe we are.

* * * * *

That'll finish up part one. Lemme know if the tables are all fucked up or if my math seems inelegant.

There will be a part two using this same information in regards to who selected which picks and analyzing results based on genre. Worry not, it's much, much shorter.
