A Note About Scoring

During my initial draft, I took the time to explain my point system, how I balanced the fact that some people had more Top/Blorg films than others, how scaling was re-jiggered but.... it's boring. It's just so, so boring. So instead I ask that you close your eyes and blindly trust the system.

The only thing I will say is that the point gap between Likes/Dislikes and Super Likes/Dislikes was tweaked. Before, a "Super" was considerably more points than a regular Like/Dislike. That gap has been narrowed. I thought it was a bit more fair, as if a film is TRULY great (or awful) then it would wind up in a Top/Blorg list. Ultimately, this tweak hasn't made a big difference.

There is, however, one scoring change that I need to discuss in depth. And it's what I like to call...

Le Petite Maman Paradox

The situation is this: MovieFest's scoring system has historically been based on a maximum attendance of eight people. It is a point-based system, and as such a film that eight people saw and give a "Like" will naturally beat out a film that only seven saw and gave a "Like".

And this is fine. The film that more people enjoyed SHOULD do better. The problem occurs when attendance significantly varies from the eight-person average. Before this we only had one year with sub-7 people, Year 11, and none of its films were statistically meaningful enough for me to consider changing the math back in 2017.

But just so you understand the problem, here's an example I faced back then: The Expandables from the aforementioned Year 11. Back in 2017, of its six viewers, it got 1 Indifferent, 1 Super Dislike (with a Bottom Fifteen appearance), and four Dislikes. This put is WAY down in the overall rankings at #229, but all you need to do is look at the film right below it, A Good Day to be Black & Sexy, from the following year (Year 12), to see the issue. Black & Sexy had a full eight-person attendance, receiving 2 Indifferents, 1 Super Dislike, and 5 Dislikes. So while similar in scores, The Expandables' Bottom Film appearance should have been enough to put it below Black & Sexy. Instead, because B & S was disliked by a higher number of people, it narrowly edge Expendables out.

Given this, an argument could have been made that if scoring were scaled up to an eight-person average for Year 11 (as in, the years where fewer than eight people attended, we adjust scores up or down based on an eight-person scaling system), then The Expendables would have dropped below Black & Sexy and - from one perspective - this would have been more in line with where it deserved to be.

I didn't do that last time, but now that all five of the Post-2017 years have had sub-eight attendance (with some at six), and with sub-eight attendance likely to be the new norm, it means that it is much harder for new films to compete.

The problem truly presents itself, however, with one film: Petite Maman. Viewed by only three people (the smallest viewership ever), Petite Manan did - without spoiling anything - very well for itself. Yet because it was seen by so few people, it couldn't generate a lot of points. In a system with no scaling, it would have been our 43rd overall film in this year's survey, falling below Weiner. Weiner did well for itself (seven out of eight Likes, two of them Super), but it felt - at least to me - unfair that it did better than a film that was significantly better received. Instead, Weiner won out simply by being more palatable to a larger number of people.

Some might say: "let's just take the overall average and scale it up to adjust". Except if Petite Manan were scaled up in that way, it would have become our #1 Film of All Time. Like I said, Petite Maman did well for itself.

Then others might argue: "well that's just too bad for those little French time-traveling twerps; they're just going to have to grow up and suck some Weiner."

And of course the problem with any kind of scaling is that it assumes everyone would vote in line with the average, which isn't fair either.

In the end, I implemented a partial scaling system. For most films it barely affected their score, though there were a couple outliers. It's not a perfect system, but I hope it acts as a happy compromise. For the most part, the changes were small, and I'll point out any major discrepancies when I see them.

And with that disclaimer that nobody read out of the way, ON TO THE SURVEY!

First, a note about the icons. The Top/Blorg films have three different icons now: one if they were unchanged from the 2017 survey (/), one if they are a new entry in the 2022 survey but weren't a Top or Blorg film in 2017 ( / ), and one if they were on a Top/Bottom List in 2017, but have since fallen (or "faded") off ( / ). Hopefully this gives a visual clue as to the shifting scores of some of these films since the Top & Blorg Lists are a big factor in final scoring.

Secondly, I invited everyone during this year's survey to update their old scores, expecting that no one would. To my surprise, The Man and Elad actually revised a number of their old ratings. TBP, meanwhile, set about the lofty task of reviewing his entire list and made it halfway through Year 1 before giving up. Any time someone changed a regular vote, it will have icon to indicate. You'll see, for instance, those two "No Vote" votes for TBP up above (they were previously Indifferent). He made these changes since according to him he was playing basketball during that time. That should, theoretically, mean that Elad's votes should also be thrown out but... eh.

Thirdly, ties. I can't tell you how bizarre it is that there are ties. A Dislike vote for The Man counts as -0.751540616 points. A Dislike vote for MMZ, meanwhile, counts as -0.66736947. How any combination of these various scores could result in ties - let alone having it happen multiple times - is insane to me. I don't consider it a big deal as it mostly only affected the mid-tier films, but just know it haunted me for hours.

With that out of the way, let's talk about our inaugural year.

The adjustments to narrow the point gap between Super and Non-Super votes has led to some slight shifting, though that will be consistent across the board. Otherwise, not much has changed. Cube is still the #1 film, though it lost a lot of shine, mostly by suffering big losses in the Top Films lists. Back in 2013, Cube clocked in at 10.74 pts to make it the #7 Overall Film. The point system isn't necessarily super consistent from year to year, but it hasn't changed enough to where a film should shed half its point total. It's unlikely it will ever fall out of the top spot since Con Air's glory days are behind it, but that doesn't mean Cube hasn't heavily suffered since our first survey.

SLC Punk! got roughed up a bit since 2017, but that's only because it didn't make it onto any Bottom Films lists back then. Even without Elad's lone Blorgo Ball, it would have been the clear loser this year. Last time around it was the lowest-scoring Worst Film of the Year. That one Blorgo was enough to change that, but SLC Punk!'s -4.27 is still well below the Worst Film of the Year average, though we'll save that discussion for a little bit.

Best Film of the Year: Cube, proposed by The Man

Worst Film of the Year: SLC Punk!, proposed by MMZ

On the Rise: Yellow Submarine, as Houdini's Blorgo ball wasn't enough to counter Elad's very high ranking for it in his Top 17 list

This was quite the positive revision for Year 2, as a lot of the films had big boosts from five years ago. Alaay and The Man re-jiggered a lot of their votes to be more positive, and while three films fell of Top 17 lists compared to only one being added, two of those three fading films were from Phil. (Spoilers: I removed his entire Top/Bottom list, so all of his 2017 results will be considered "fading").

What also helps Year 2 is that not a single film earned a Blorgo ball. While there will be a few year that only had one Blorg-worthy film, Year 2 is the only year to go completely Blorg-less.

Dark City easily held on to the top spot, and actually picked up a new Top Films appearance from The Man. Despite The Man also changing his vote for Donnie Darko, this time around Donnie Darko actually fell below Run, Lola, Run for the first time ever. Lep in the Hood, which was once the #4 Overall Film of All Time back in 2009, continues to languish in a respectable second place, its glory days long behind it. And while Lep lost MMZ's Top Film vote, it also recovered from Phil's bizarre Bottom Film pick back in 2017 (where he put every Lep film in his bottom category).

Speaking of 2009, way back then, How High was the FOURTH worse film of that year, with Fear and Loathing in the bottom. I'm giving it the tiebreaker against Anywhere But Here since it was the previous Worst Film, but I was actually tempted to go the other way as it would mean Year 2 would have had four different Worst Film of the Years over the course of four surveys (Fear and Loathing -> Ronin -> How High -> Anywhere But Here). That would have been funny.

Lastly, I leave you with some math. The average score of a Worst Film of the Year was -7.08, meaning How High was a little less than half as bad as the AVERAGE Worst Film, which really speaks to how volatile Year 2 has been with its bottom film spot. This is also a good demonstration that SLC Punks's -4.27 was similarly well below average. Don't worry, we'll have some real stinkers in the future to bring those numbers closer to its average.

Best Film of the Year: Dark City, proposed by The Man

Worst Film of the Year: How High, proposed by Phil

May All Its Sins Be Forgiven: Ronin, which was the Worst Film of the Year back in 2013 and is now nearly in the positive

Time for some Train Talk.

While riding the train to Bridgeport with The Man, we had a talk about Three Colors: White. Ever since the very first survey in 2009, White had not only been The Man's least-favorite film of this year, it was his least-favorite film of All Time. It has never once not been his #1 Bottom Film pick.

Yet having recently watched the entire Three Colors series, he realized the movie wasn't that bad and changed his vote to an Indifferent (which I couldn't symbolize due to overlapping icons, since he ALSO didn't even Blorgo it). This led to a discussion about whether votes should be cast based on how one felt about the film in the moment or if outside watchings should factor into the scoring. Which lead to an even deeper discussion of whether changing votes is, at its core, wrong. Shouldn't we respect our initial perspective rather than bowing to the whims of time? Or is it OK to accept that tastes change and update our results accordingly?

Anyway, it was all theoretical, and just a way of pointing out that White has shifted significantly.

Speaking of significant shifts... Gia with its garbage -12.44 score actually IMPROVED. It faded off Snobby's and Phil's Bottom Films list (like all of Phil's films), but it was still far too despised not to be the Worst Film of the Year. In second place, Very Bad Things and its -7.54 score was, as you now know, below the Worst Film of the Year average (of -7.08), but it's still nowhere close to unseating Gia from its Crown of Suck. The only question is... did a film in a different year manage to take the Worst Film of All Time prize, which Gia has never once surrendered?

Not much point talking about the top end of this year. From Dusk Till Dawn, the #1 Film of All Time from the 2013 survey, has never fallen out of the Top 10, though time will tell if its 8.97 score will be good enough to break that mark this year.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fischer is letting out a sigh of relief as I'm the only person still willing to cast a Blorgo Ball at I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.

So the first time this survey, we have a change to a Top or Bottom Film of the Year. With Lep Back 2 tha Hood shedding two Bottom Film appearances since 2017, From Dusk Till Dawn 2 is our new loser of Year 4. It managed this feat despite being Blorg-less, thanks mostly to MagicMan's lone Super Like keeping Lep Back 2 tha Hood afloat.

The Virgin Suicides continues to cling to the top. There was a time when The Warriors gave it a run for its money, but with both Houdini and The Man dropping it from their Top Films list, it doesn't have a prayer compared to Virgins' stronger scoring. The first of Sofia Coppola's two MovieFest films hangs on to that top spot.

Why am I randomly talking about directors? No reason, I'm sure....

Finally, The Man's three-year streak of picking the Best Film of the Year was snapped by Snobby, his near-constant MovieFest rival for the Best Proposer. We'll see if anyone can best his three-year streak in the eighteen years to come.

Best Film of the Year: The Virgin Suicides, proposed by The Man

Worst Film of the Year: From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, proposed by the Group

And Fuck You In Particular: Malibooty with the most Blorgo Balls cast at it in Year 3

I want to say, from the bottom of my heart: HOW DARE YOU NOT BLORGO OUT ON PAROLE! HOW AM I THE LAST PERSON HATING ON THAT TRASH FILM? FUCK YOU. FUCK ALL OF YOU.

Out On Parole, the Fifth Worst Overall Film in 2009, made it on to four Bottom Films list that year (including Alaay's #1 Worst Film of All Time, where it has stayed ever since). It and Divorce: Italian Style have been in a back-and-forth dance ever since, and this time around Divorce, even with Snobby no longer deeming it Blorg-worthy, is still the uncontested Worst Film of the Year. It even managed to widen its lead.

Most of the other negative films aren't worth mentioning except for a few stray MMZ Blorgo Balls that barely changed the needle much. Instead we look to the top of the list, where for the first time ever, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys is actually starting to sweat. With Pieces of April jumping on Elad's Top Films list and Dangerous Lives falling off Phil's, the gap between the two is narrowing, though spoilers: Dangerous Lives ranked MUCH higher on the Top Films lists where it appeared, earning it way more points. It we ever move to a rank-less format for Top Films, however (like we're doing with Blorgo Balls), then Dangerous Lives might be in trouble.

We won't, though. As I'll discuss in a bit, the Blorgo Ball Gimmick was an unmitigated disaster.

The rise and fall of Battle Royale has been incredible. It was the #1 Overall Film in 2009 at 14.2 points. It then plummeted to #9 in 2013 at 10.00 points and fell even harder to #19 and 6.86 points in 2017. This time it's back with a vengeance. With The Man and Snobby added it to their Top Films list, it had a huge boost to maintain a solid grip on the Best Film of the Year. We'll see where it lands in the Final Results, but this has definitely been a welcome boost to an old classic. For those curious about point scaling, without it, Battle Royale would be at 8.05 (instead of 8.32), so you get an idea of how small of a boost the scaling actually adds.

As one film rises, another must fall. 11:14 was #9 in 2009, #26 in 2013, and #42 in 2017. With it falling off Elad's Top Films list this year, God only knows how much more it will tumble in the Final Results.

Even with it dropping from two Bottom Films lists, Coffee and Cigarettes is still easily the Worst Film of the Year. It shed a few points, but I can't see a time when it'll ever lose out to any other film in this list given its universal disdain, though Frontez still has an outside chance to leapfrog it depending on its Blorgo-status in the next survey.

You Keep Me Hanging On: The Squid and the Whale, still on both TheBluePlayer's and Elad's Top Films list all these years later

My experiment was a failure.

I decided, in a naive way, to try two competing scoring methods. Top Films were ranked, often ranging from 1 to 17 (though as we'll see, that wasn't always the case), while Bottom Films were assigned Blorgo Balls, a cute buzzword that, in a mathematical sense, just meant "they all receive an equally distributed amount of negative points". Ranked vs. Unranked.

Except the problem with this system is there has to be a rough correlation between the number of Top Films and the number of Bottom Films or your math begins to have some problems. If the total of all Top Films is, say, +10 additional points divided between 17 films, then the Blorgo system should distribute -10 points to counter balance. Simple, right?

It is...... if people assigned an amount of Blorgo balls consistent to how many Top Films they had picked. But if you're Snobhunter, who has a full Top 17 but only cast 3 Blorgo Balls, the math becomes a nightmare. Those +10 points distributed among his Top 17 films yield small boosts of +0.50 or +0.60 (depending on their rank). Those boosts can make minor adjustments in the overall rankings, but they can't single handedly jump certain films multiple spots.

But those same theoretical -10 points spread out over only 3 films would be another issue altogether. Snobhunter, simply by being more reserved with his Blorgo Balls, would have wildly shifted the positions of the three films he most hated. So to counter this, I had to put a cap on just how many negative points a Blorgo Ball could yield. Otherwise it would have been a total mess.

Ultimately, I decided the most negative points a Blorgo Ball could generate wouldn't exceed the highest possible points any film could get from a Top Films appearance. Since there were WAY fewer Blorgo Balls cast than Top Films, we'll ultimately have more positive points than negative in the survey as a result, but this usually happens for one reason or another (mostly people not filling out complete Top/Bottom Lists). So fine, whatever. I don't care about that.

All this is to say that - if Blorgo Balls had never been capped - Farce of the Penguins would have been our new #1 Overall Worst Film of All Time, surpassing even Gia. Because The Man only cast five Blorgo Balls, his Blorgos were capped and the cap was just enough to keep Farce of the Penguins out of a very tight competition for that bottom spot.

In the end, that's probably for the best. Gia received a Super Dislike from every single participant, whereas Farce didn't. The both received three Blorgo's, so based on that fact alone, it doesn't feel fair that Gia should benefit from my faulty math. So congratulations, Farce of the Penguins: you live to fight another day.

This isn't to say that Gia is the Worst Film Overall of this survey. It has been in every past survey, but there's still plenty of films to come. Perhaps something post-2017 could snatch the mantel that Farce of the Penguins just narrowly missed.

Regarding the rest of Year 7, there's not much to say. Elephant won, but that's nothing new. Even though it has the same Like/Super Like points as Mysterious Skin, it's always ranked in more Top Film lists by a quite higher margin. And Oldboy continues to be in a hotly contested third place.

Congratulations to Death at a Funeral, leaping past Weeping Camel to take the Worst Film of the Year this time around.

Death benefited greatly from The Man revising his vote for The Story of the Weeping Camel to a Super Like - being the only person to like Camel - and though there's narry a Blorg cast Death's way, six of seven dislikes was enough to put it in that bottom spot.

The top films of Year 8 all suffered quite a bit. Crank fell off two Top Films lists (I'll have more on that later in the survey), Sad Movie (even with Alaay's change to the math of Super Likes) lost a Top Film appearance, and Glengary Glen Ross picked up a Blorgo Ball from Elad. So while the ranking didn't change, the year as a whole suffered a big point drop from 2017.

Speaking of suffering, someone needs to help Lil' Pimp deal with its whiplash. It was positive in 2009 (with no Bottom Films appearances) then dropped way into the negatives to become the 11th Worst Film Overall in 2013 with three Bottom Films appearances (including, somehow, TheBluePlayer's #1 Least Favorite Film of All Time), then fell off all but Snobhunter's Bottom Films list in 2017, then had The Man change his vote to a Super Dislike now in 2022. This is the little movie that just can't seem to catch a break.

Oh, and about the cap on points for Blorgo Balls? Just pointing out that if I didn't, Lil' Pimp - one of Snobhunter's three Blorgo films - would have easily claimed the Bottom Film of the Year based solely on that single Blorgo Ball.

Finally, while The Man has claimed five of the past seven Best Film of the Year awards, this is his first Bottom Film of the Year winner. Will he continue his excellent run or is this the beginning of a backslide? Stay tuned to find out! (Ironically, he earned that Worst Film of the Year because he changed his Weeping Camel vote to a Super Like. Womp womp.)

Some could say The Fall suffered quite a............ drop. Without those Top Film points to sustain it, Let the Right One In easily eclipsed it, especially with MMZ's Blorgo Ball against Dr. Horrible holding it back from taking over the top spot. Though we've seen a couple Bottom Films change since the 2017 survey, this is the first time a Top Film has shifted, though it's admittedly always been a tight race between the top three films of Year 9.

Even with TheBluePlayer holding off Blorgo'ing it this year, Who Made the Potatoe Salad? was so universally derided as to easily hang on to that bottom spot. Meanwhile the bloodbath that is Repo! The Genetic Opera continues its unceasing battle. Reaching the positive for the first time ever (at a meager 0.06), it greatly benefited from the shift to unranked Blorgo Balls, as it was Alaay's #2 Least Favorite film in 2017 and likely would have stayed in the negatives if we were still using a ranked system.

Houdini continues to really drag Year Nine through the mud with three Blorgo'd films to only one Super Like (exactly as in 2017). Among all of the attendees, Houdini was the most consistent with his Top and Bottom Favorite films, so don't expect much shuffling where he's concerned. Aside from Malibooty, he hasn't had any new entrants into either list between now and 2017, though a few did fall off along the way.

Results:

If you recall from the 2017 survey, Year 10 was EASILY the Best Year of All Time, with an average film value of 2.04 (it's closest competitor, Year 2, had an average of 1.18). It's still obviously well loved, but it's worth noting that it lost all of its Top Films selections from both TBP and Phil this year, which will almost certainly hurts its overall score. (In both of their cases the losses makes some sense, as four of those six weren't even for films they Super Liked). Combined with the two new Blorgo'd films and it'll be interesting to see how many points Year 10 has lost in the second half of our survey when we rank the Best and Worst Years.

Black Dynamite remains on the top, to little surprise. Black Dynamite - which was only the Third Overall Best Film of the Year in the 2013 survey - had huge gains when we shifted to a Like/Super Like system, but with it falling off Elad's Top Films list it's definitely lost some shine. How much shine? Let's just say I've got a little segment on that way down below. Meanwhile, In Bruges got a solid boost with both Alaay and The Man changing their votes from Likes to Super Likes, further narrowing the gap between these two films. We'll have to wait and see if Black Dynamite's still impressive score is enough to re-claim the title of #1 Overall Film of All Time this year or if a new contender has emerged to supplant it.

There were two other films that had big shifts in the top half of this year: He Got Game, plumetting from 4th to 7th place, and Troll 2 have rebounding from 6th to 4th. It was, if you're remember, the #2 Top Film of the Year back in 2013 before the Anti-Troll Wave of the 2017 survey knocked all of those films down a peg. We'll see if the Trollessaince continues with its sister films.

Bitch Slap is still in the basement and even has another Blorgo Ball from MMZ to ensure Observe and Report doesn't leapfrog it. As much as we talk about what a powerhouse Year 10 was, it really had some garbage films in the bottom half.

As the first year with six people, I feel compelled to point out what some of these films would have been without point scaling. Best Worst Movie would've been 6.16 (compared to 6.64), Unstoppable would've been 4.13 (instead of 4.27) and The Expendables would've been -4.29 (instead of -4.63). So if you're worried about the scaling making huge changes, don't be.... except for two key exceptions that we'll get to later.

Year 11 is almost the definition of boring and I can't even pretend to care about analyzing it. Best Worst Movie got another point jump by showing up on The Man's Top Films list (much like Troll 2 did a year ago), so it looks as though he's single-handedly bringing the Troll films back to their former glory.

Even though it added a Top Films appearance by Elad, Rubber actually did worse this year, thanks in large part to it being fairly low on both of its Top Films lists and the unranked Blorgo Balls casting more negative points against it than it had in 2017. This is one of those films whose ranking pretty heavily depends on my scoring methodology.

The Expendables takes the Worst Film spot just like the last two times, ushering in Alaay's first Worst Film of the Year winner. Even though 30 of Alaay's 47 films are behind us, he's not yet done making an impact on Top and Bottom Films.

The Trollessaince has finally run out of steam. Trollhunter, which was on four Top Films lists in 2013, has lost its last supporter as Elad has turned his back on it. Pour one out for our boy.

It's not the only film to lose some steam. Drive was the #2 Overall Best Film back in 2017, but even with MMZ re-appreciating it, it still dropped from two Top Films lists and is fairly low on two of the three that it's still on. Even so, it was more than enough to hold on to be the Best Film of the Year. If, however, it continues to slip, I could envision a day where it falls below Kaboom, what with the fact that I don't expect Elad or MMZ to ever drop that film from their Top Films lists.

The other big winner was Tucker and Dale, both in The Man's point revision and Houdini's newly added Top Film appearance. Considering it only amassed 2.2 points in 2013, this is certainly a big shift for it.

Speaking of recoveries, The Six Wives of Henry LaFey, despite being the Worst Film of the Year, has only done better and better as the years progress. It was the #9 Worst Overall Film of All Time back in 2013 (where recency bias may have played a part) and now if it ever gets un-Blorgo'd by Elad, Black & Sexy would overtake it for the bottom spot. (This is largely a result of the changes to the Super/Regular scoring system, as LaFey has far more Super Dislikes, but Phil's lone Like does a lot of work.)

I mentioned before that Houdini's Top/Blorgo Lists stayed fairly consistent, but Year 12 was a big exception, with a number of films changing hands.

Best Film of the Year: Drive, proposed by Snobhunter

Worst Film of the Year: The Six Wives of Henry LaFey, proposed by The Man

And Have The Droid's Memory Wiped: The Star Wars Holiday Special, while still sucking, fell off two Bottom Films lists and is no longer a contender for that Worst Film spot

So far you've seen a lot of shifting allegiances. While one person drops a film from their Top Films list, another person coincidentally added it to theirs. Or, conversely, a deeply disliked film lost one or two detractors, pushing it a bit more towards center.

Well that's not the case for Liberal Arts, as the three people who hated it in 2017 still hate it now. It's not as bad as Gia or Farce's -12 points, but Liberal Arts is still deeply in the disliked category. As a refresher, the average Worst Film of the Year had a -7.08, so that -10.53 is a pretty big deal.

Goon, meanwhile, remains atop a pretty meh year with no real viable challenger. For the most part there have been very few changes in Year 13, with the big exception of...

Gayby. Once again, Snobhunter strikes, casting one of his three Blorgo Balls. Combined that with it falling off MMZ's Top Film list from 2017 and Gayby was dragged solidly into the gutter.

And with Goon handing Houdini a Best Film of the Year win, it leaves only Phil and MMZ without one to their name. You won't have to wait long for at least one of those two to earn theirs.

Best Film of the Year: Goon, proposed by Houdini

Worst Film of the Year: Liberal Arts, proposed by MMZ

No Longer Regarded: Give My Regards to Broad Street, which, though still right behind Liberal Arts, is at least Blorgo-less this time around

Houdini and Houdini alone controlled the fate of this year. By dropping You're Next from his Top Films list and adding Teen Beach Movie, he effectively crowned the new champion all by himself (and robbed himself of a Best Film of the Year award in the process). Instead that honor goes to, believe it or not, the MagicMan, who had six of the previous thirteen Worst Films of the Year. We'll see if his 1-6 record gets any better in the years to come, as well as if Phil will go without a Best Film of the Year.

Houdini wasn't the only one changing things up, as The Man made some big re-votes, updating two Super Likes and adding You're Next to his Top Films list to really help Year 14's scoring. Sofia Coppola got a slight reprieve with Bling Ring avoiding Snobhunter's hate this time around, though as the Second Worst Film of the Year, it certainly hurt the shine from Virgin Suicides nearly a decade earlier.

In a fun twist, every single Top/Bottom Film from the 2017 survey faded away and was replaced with new entrants, so the scattered few favorites (and one Blorgo) are all brand new this year. Funny Games in particular was the recipient of both a Top and Blorg appearance to continue balancing out its perfectly mediocre score.

Speaking of mediocre: this entire year. Just look at all those Indifferent votes! Part of this was a result of Year 14 having to wait until 2017 for everyone to vote on it as I wasn't doing yearly mini-surveys back then. This, not surprisingly, is the result of your woeful memories.

While there were no major changes in the bottom films, the adjustments to my point scoring definitely hurt all of them, and Ewoks once again sits squarely in the basement. Snobhunter's 3-0 record was finally snapped with Ewoks handing him his first Worst Film of the Year.

Best Film of the Year: Teen Beach Movie, proposed by MagicManZach

Worst Film of the Year: Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, proposed by Snobhunter

I Coulda Been a Contendah: The Raid: Redemption, which had some positive revisions but still was far too meh to break the Top 3

Turns out people still love Kung Fury. Even with it losing a Top Films appearance, it actually has MORE points than in 2017, thanks to scoring adjustments and it moving up the few lists it's on.

While Alaay had a bad year here (taking the #2 and #3 Worst Films spots), at least he didn't have the #1 Worst Film of the Year, which goes to Leprechan: Origins, thanks mostly to Don't Be a Menace falling off of two Bottom Films lists. If Blorgo Balls hadn't been point capped then The Man's lone vote against all fifteen minutes of I'm a Cyborg But That's OK would actually have put it in the bottom spot, but alas for The Man, instead he'll get his third Worst Film of the Year award, continuing to diminish his lofty 6-0 start. Some might say I manipulated the point system to unfairly benefit myself, and to those people I say: it's funnier when The Man loses.

Really not much else to say about this year unless you want to focus on Maggie going from a Like to Super Like by Alaay. But you shouldn't because it's Maggie.

Year 16 - only one year removed from the 2017 survey - is an excellent example of how sometimes you need a little distance to see a year clearly. Collectively, seven Top Films appearances faded away while four new ones were added, with a number of Bottom Films shifting as well. The result? Both the Top and Bottom Film of This Year have changed hands since the 2017 survey.

Let's start in the gutter. If you're remember from last survey, MMZ had only a single film in his Bottom Films list: Chi-Raq. And while Chi-Raq still made his "fuck you" list, because he spread his Blorgo's out more evenly this year, Chi-Raq didn't suffer quite the same point loss. Combined that with it falling off TBP and TM's Bottom Films list and it regained a lot of lost points.

It couldn't have done it on its own, however. Unlike Chi-Raq, the people who hated Creep still really fucking hate Creep, and even The Man updated his Dislike into a Super Dislike, helping it easily take the Worst Film of the Year. That's now back-to-back stinkers for The Man, dropping him down to a 6-4 record in my stupid gameification of MovieFest.

Meanwhile, Houdini joins the two-time club as Green Room got some big love between surveys to take the Best Film of the Year award. Houdini has only picked 19 out of MovieFest's 329 films, so his 2-1 record so far is actually pretty wild.

It wouldn't have gone down that way without every single person turning their back on Staten Island Summer. It dropped off all three Best Film lists and lost Phil a chance at having his first Best Film of the Year win. We'll be hearing from DeLuca's lawyers about this.

The Lobster had its own revisionary swing, dropped from three lists but popping up on two others. It might seem odd that Staten Island is still above it despite having no Top Films points, but Phil's lone Indifferent vote for The Lobster really dragged its score down.

Even so, those top three films did very well for themselves. We've already talked about the average score of a Worst Film of the Year (-7.08), so now's a good time to talk about the inversion. Most Best Films of the Year winners averaged 8.14 points, and with The Lobster being very close to that number, Year 16 nearly had three films above the Best Film average. We'll see how that translates in the second part of the survey when we compare the years against each other.

In case you're wondering, the lowest-placing Best Film of the Year so far was actually way back in Year 1 with Cube at 5.89. I tried to emphasize how badly Cube has suffered since its first appearance in the 2009 survey and hopefully this hammers home how mediocre it's become among the All-Time greats. We'll see if any Best Film of the Year in the coming years will manage to place below it.

They Stay the Same Age: The Guest, which is the only film to have the exact same score it had in the 2017 survey

We're one year away from new data! Get excited!

What we weren't excited about was Year 17, however, as it had five films drop off of Top Films lists from the 2017 Survey and six films go un-Blorgo'd this time around. Again, recency bias is a hell of a drug, so it's not surprising these films left more of a mark back in 2017 then they do nowadays.

What IS impressive is that Year 17 has only a single Top Film appearance: Coherence by Alaay. That is tied for the lowest number of any year, showing just how mediocre Year 17 was in retrospect.

All these fading Top Films spots definitely hurt, and nobody suffered worse than Everybody Wants Some!!. It's still the Top Film of the Year, but back in 2017 it was the 11th Overall Best Film of All Time, just narrowly missing out on the Top 10. No surprise that you won't be seeing it there this year.

The hotly contested The Void overleaps All Hallows Eve to take the Worst Film of the Year, which is no surprise given it earned three Blorgo Balls AND fell off Houdini's Top Film list. It actually had a smattering of fans, but it's legacy was enough to keep it in the basement, whereas All Hallows Eve just didn't have the same impact.

There's other stuff to talk about but fuck it. I don't want to. I want to get to the new data.

You remember when I said Year 17 with its one Top Film appearance was tied for the least Top Films appearances? Well, welcome to Year 18, where Dave Made a Maze's lone Top Film appearance helped it take the cake. It certainly didn't need that vote as it was the only film to be liked by all seven participants and handily took the Top Film of the Year award, but The Man couldn't miss out on an opportunity to upscore one of his picks.

This isn't to say other films weren't well liked. Ingrid Goes West has four likes and two supers to place a respectable second and Riptide was similarly well regarded. In general, there was a lot of consensus among the participants, at least in the early hours, with Snobby being the lone standout, strongly disagreeing with the group on both Shin Godzilla and Andre the Giant.

Even though it was a bit tepid, Year 18 was mostly well received: it has 36 Likes and 10 Super Likes compared to 16 Dislikes and 7 Super Dislikes. Houdini and The Man particularly enjoyed Year 18, and the only person to be overall negative was TheBluePlayer, thanks mostly to being the only person to Blorgo any film this year.

Shockingly, that Blorgo didn't move the needle much, as The Killing of the Sacred Deer was only the third worst film of 2018. Instead the honor goes to My Entire High School Floating Into the Sea, which was disliked by everyone except Elad. Its -4.67 pts is nowhere close to How High's -3.63, but it's clear that High School was one of the more forgiveable Worst Films of the Year, which makes sense since we only watch like half of it.

Yet again, The Man dominated both the Top and Bottom Film of the Year awards. Though since The Man constitutes nearly 33% of all MovieFest picks, we can hardly by surprised it happened. Even so, with the MagicMan having stabilized from his disastrous 0-6 start, The Man is one Worst Film of the Year away from tying MMZ at 6. Time will tell who wins out this epic showdown.

This is what I'm going to call the Mirror Year, and one look at all that yellow tell us why.

With the exception of Houdini, mucking up the works, we had nearly a complete change of perspective going from Mandy's abysmal triple-Blorg, six Super Dislikes to Plus One's universal praise. Plus One was so well loved that no other film in Year 19 made it on to a Top Film list, and with a score over 10.00, it's clear by now it will be placing VERY high on the Overall Films list.

Mandy, on the other hand, will likely be in the exact same position way on the other side of the rankings. Snobhunter, who started with a 3-0 run, falls to 4-3 as Mandy blunders on to the scene to be his lowest-rated pick yet.

In a fun bit of math, if Houdini had cast a Super Dislike against Mandy instead of a like, Mandy would have dropped below Gia to be our #1 Worst Overall Film of All Time. (Albeit only by 0.01 pts.)

There were a lot of fans of year 19. Houdini didn't cast a single dislike, and while most of the others had a few films they really didn't enjoy, Elad, The Man, Phil, and Snobby all had a slew of liked films on the list. The lone holdout was once again TBP, who only liked a single film.

There were a couple fun divisive films with mix-reactions scattered throughout the year in Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town, Sorry to Bother You, Mega Time Squad, and Secret Obsession. And Elad's lone Super Dislike and Blorgo Ball against Upgrade was enough to keep it far from the top of the rankings, even with an extremely tepid Searching taking the #2 spot at 3.7 pts. Year 19 is a tale of two movies with a whole lot of nothing in between.

Look at all those No Vote icons. Year 20 (aka VirtualFest) was the beginning of an ugly two-year span of films that had a much smaller audience than previous years, leading to generally fewer points. That being said, at least these films left an impression, as other than Alaay, there were very few Indifferent votes cast this year.

Speaking of Alaay: this was a HUGE year for him. Those who read the 2017 survey will remember the Fall of the House of Alaay storyline, where the changes to the Like/Super Like system - combined with a horrible stretch between Years 14 and 17 - resulted in him plummeting in the point ranking. Despite being the person who has proposed the second-most MovieFest films (47 to The Man's 103), he actually sat out both Year 17 and 18 by not proposing a single flick, so terrified was he of making any more bad picks and tarnishing his legacy.

Year 20 fixed all that as his only two selections were our #1 and #2 Films of the Year. I'm actually glad I beat myself, because the math definitely seems a bit fuzzy on this one. Palm Springs had 6 Super Likes, 1 Like, and four Top Film appearances. Portrait was watched by fewer people yet.... BECAUSE Portrait was seen by so few people, it benefited more from point scaling.

How much so? If point scaling were factored out, Portrait would drop from 9.34 to 8.19 (a pretty significant dip) and would in turn fall below Palm Springs (which itself would have dropped from 9.08 to 8.78). So here, for arguably the first time, is the controversial side of the point scaling system. While in the past it hasn't been that much of a factor, this, I feel, is the first of two big exceptions of the Le Petite Maman Paradox. They were, ironically, both for Céline Sciamma films, though we're getting ahead of ourselves...

It's also not the end of the story. For while Palm Springs had a lot of Top Films appearances, they were all pretty low. Not to ruin the surprise, but it was Houdini, Elad, and The Man's lowest-ranked Top Film of All Time, and I wouldn't be shocked at all if it falls off all their rankings the next time around. Portait, meanwhile, placed much higher in its three Top Films appearances so... fuck it. It won. Deal with it.

These weren't the only films to do well. The star power of Lexi Belle propelled Samurai Cop 2 to a strong third place and earned it a positive review from all seven attendees. VelociPastor was similarly well liked, though seen by fewer people. It point scaled from 4.88 to 5.57, which was a nice bump but not enough to shift it up or down too much. I'm actually surprised it didn't do better, frankly, and expected one or two Best Film appearances from it, but 5.88 certainly isn't bad.

Color Out of Space and Spree were the big divisive films this year, and both landed smack in the middle as a result. Even without The Man's Top Films appearance for it, Serenity treaded water just fine. And while Phil and The Man hated Cats, most of us weren't quite as fazed.

Marriage Story being in the gutter shouldn't be surprising. Other than Elad's lone Like vote, it was pretty well lambasted and earned one of only two Blorgo Balls for the year. Bloodshot fell below The Hunt thanks to point scaling, but neither could match Marriage Story's overall shittiness. Even without The Man's Blorgo Ball, Marriage Story easily would have been the loser of VirtualFest. And with it taking the Worst Film of the Year crown, Snobhunter's record has fallen to 4-4. Let's see if he can recover in the years to come.

Phil, meanwhile, casts his last vote of his survey: a Dislike for Serenity.

Phil as it turns out wasn't the only person to cast their last vote of the survey. Though Houdini attended the first half of Year 21, he never filled out the Google Form and so his results were omitted.

Which means HurricaneFast was mostly a five-man affair, though MMZ popped in long enough to let everyone know how much he hated finally getting to attend again. With a Dislike, three Super Dislikes, and one Blorgo Ball, that lone Super Like for Tammy and the T-Rex wasn't enough to counter how much he fucking hated Year 21.

The other virtual attendee - Elad - was the other side of the coin, casting only a single Dislike to a smattering of positive votes. In fact this year, which was roundly panned after the fact, ultimately wound up more positive then negative. And while Alaay and TheBluePlayer might not have had strong opinions, Snobby had a bunch of Super votes all over the place while The Man largely enjoyed what we got.

Psycho Goreman actually had tougher competition than expected from Red Notice. While it ultimately didn't need it to win, The Man's lone Top Film vote was enough to carry it to victory, though when compared to Cube's 5.81 score, it's clear that Psycho Goreman is now the lowest-place Best Film of the Year winner. If this were Year 10, it would have been the 7th-Best Film that year. And that's factoring in that it benefitted from point scaling. Without it, it would have been a very weak 4.59.

Knights of Badassdom lost and it did so entirely because of the MagicMan, who cast the only Blorgo Ball of this year. Otherwise The Last Blockbuster would have taken that title, and I kind of wish it did because it would have been the only Worst Film of the Year to not receive a single Super Dislike. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Once again, The Man has the honor of taking both the Best and Worst Film of the Year. This ties him with MMZ at 6 Worst Films with one year to go. We'll see if Year 22 can break this tie, though given The Man also has NINE more Best Film of the Years than MMZ, it's not exactly a fair fight.

And though Kristen Stewart may have won his heart and his only Super Like, Alaay's affections weren't enough to drag Happiest Season out of fifth place.

You saved all your strongest opinions for Year 22.

With seven Top Films appearances and five Blorgo Balls, Year 22 certainly had a lot of commotion. But before we talk about that, let's talk about what everyone truly cares about.

Let's talk about Petite Fucking Maman.

It did not, in the end, win its year, and frankly that's for the best. Though it is the only film to receive both a Super Like AND a Top Film appearance from everyone who saw it (all three of us!), that "three" is still just too small, and it would have felt like the scoring system was a bit wonky if it beat out Everyone Everywhere All At Once.

Without any point scaling whatsoever, it would have plummted to 5.50 pts, putting it barely ahead of The Edge of Seventeen. And while Edge of Seventeen was very well received, that would have struck me as crazy for a film with a perfect record. Ultimately I'm happy with the point scaling though others may disagree. And whatever, this is my survey. Disagree all you want, dweebs! May the reign of Petite Maman never end!

I'm just kidding. It will. If there's one word I can use to describe Year 22, it would be "recency bias". Blorgo Balls for things like Morbius and Wizards seem like the kind of knee-jerk, in-the-moment reaction that will be forgotten the next time the survey comes around. MMZ's Top Films votes for Shortbus and Buffalo '66 will get even funnier when we look at WHERE they landed on his list, but let's just say I'm calling him out here and now and don't expect them to be quite as highly esteemed in the 2026 survey.

Everything Everywhere All At Once, however, will be an interesting beast to judge. It similarly did well and certainly deserves that top spot, but half the attendees only gave it a Like, and if those Top Films appearances dry up then this could easily tumble into Cube or Psycho Goreman territory as one of the more lackluster winners. For now, though, it is solidly average.

Speaking of solid: both Edge of Seventeen and Invisible Sister were fun hits. While they may not have rave reviews, everyone who saw them liked them and with a little extra point scaling they did quite well for themselves. They were the only two films from the VR selection process to be viewed at MovieFest, and with both of them being fine additions, it should bode well for this new selection method in the years to come.

The Man mostly hated this year, which isn't surprising when you realize it was the first time since Year 14 that he proposed fewer than six films (he only had three this year). MMZ was similarly unimpressed, Alaay was about as indifferent as you get, while everyone else mostly liked Year 22 (with a few exceptions thrown in).

Buffalo '66 was a funny one. In the showdown between MMZ and TBP, it was The Man's lone Dislike that drove it into the negatives, with Alaay and Snobby simply having no strong opinion one way or the other. I could see this one being a stalemate for years to come like Repo! or Oldboy.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, meanwhile, was brutalized. It takes a lot for The Man to downvote his own movie, and with those extra Blorgo Balls it was an easy Worst Film of All Time winner. Only Alaay, who was too busy cleaning, had no strong feelings one way or the other.

For those keeping track: this newest Worst Film of the Year gives The Man the new record at 7 Worst Films of the Year out of 22 years. But I feel like that, in itself, deserves more discussion. So join me below, where we do just that.

As mentioned, The Man ends our survey with a mighty 7 Worst Film of the Year winners. Which is.... average. One of the things to remember is that because The Man has proposed nearly 1/3rd of all films, it's basically on par that he has 1/3 of the Worst Films. If anything, we should be impressed by his above-average 11 Best Film wins, with 5 of them coming in the past 6 years. And while yes, those Worst Of numbers ramped up at the end, it's because....

The Man DWARFED the past seven years of MovieFest. Starting in Year 15, he has proposed 58 films to everyone else's 51. Yes, everyone else's. Combined. And this is factoring in that he only got three films through last year, drastically hurting his average. One of the big reasons I didn't do this survey last year like scheduled was because I didn't just want to talk about The Man's films, and that was hard to do when he had become the face of MovieFest.

So instead let's talk about someone else.

And that person is the MagicMan. We'll actually break down scores and averages and find out who the "best" proposer is in Part II, but I feel like it's worth acknowledging that MMZ has recovered from an 0-6 start. True, he only has the one Best Film of the Year (Teen Beach Movie), but at least he's managed to stop the bleeding. Part of that is simply through non-attendance, but even in the years he wasn't there he managed to sneak a couple films in. We'll see how this translated when we rank his final scoring as a proposer.

Snobhunter, meanwhile, is a sadder tale. After such a promising start, he's had a rough past few years. Since Year 14, he and The Man have traded off Worst Film of the Year wins, but during that time Kung Fury has been his only big success. It's almost as though by settling down and having three children he hasn't been able to keep up with The Man's movie-watching habits.

Speaking of people who haven't kept pace with past movie-watching habits, Alaay's 2-1 record is pretty good considering he constitutes 14.29% of all MovieFest films, so he frankly should have WAY more Worst Film of the Year awards. The only thing I can say is that he came close a number of times. Both Don't Be a Menace (-5.73) and But I'm a Cyborg (-6.28) nearly dropped below Lep: Origins (-6.28) in Year 15 while The Void (-6.42) just managed to edge out All Hallows Eve (-5.58) two years later. Alaay has had a rebound in the 2022 survey - which we'll discuss in Part II - but just know a few changed votes could make his stats look way worse.

I already spoke about how Houdini's 2-1 record is super impressive given he only has 19 films to his name (including, of course, The Edge of Seventeen, which he totally picked). And this is factoring in that he narrowly had another Best Film of the Year in You're Next.

Not much can be said about either Elad's 1-0 or TBP's 1-1. Neither propose many movies, especially in the past decade, so we shouldn't be shocked their stats are somewhat meager, though it is odd that Elad - who does have a number of early-fest classics - only has one Best Film of the Year win in Elephant.

What DOES surprise me is that Phil only has one Worst Film of the Year. He has perennially been the runner-up to MMZ in the "worst" proposer category, so to see that he only has one Worse Of title to his name is a bit odd. He didn't, for those keeping track, ever get that Best Film of the Year win.

Anyway, this stat was dumb, but I know The Man will get a kick out of it so there you have it. Let's move on to show off those Top and Blorgo lists we've heard so much about.

Holy Céline Sciamma! The French auteur responsible for Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Petite Maman dominated Alaay's rankings, popping in to claim his Second and Third Top Film spots. We'll see in 2026 how much of that was recency bias and how much is legitimate, but I can't imagine anyone is surprised that the visionary behind a French lesbian period piece did well in Alaay's rankings. Black Dynamite still reigns supreme, but this sudden Sciama-wave has left its mark.

Most of his other changes aren't particularly noteworthy, though the 11 place drop for Drive, taking it from 2nd to 13th, was definitely noticeable, as was Crank going from 6th to 16th. As the only person to still rep Mysterious Skin, its drop from 4th place to 11th certainly isn't going to help its ranking this year. Meanwhile, Romantic Comedies Plus One and Palm Springs were the only other post-2017 films to crank the Top 17, though Green Room - which didn't make his 2017 survey - eked its way onto the list this time around.

Alaay was fairly average with his Blorgo Balls, castin them at his thirteen most despised films. One thing I didn't mention in the year-by-year breakdown is that I've tended to slide to more and more Indifferent votes in the later years, not having nearly as many strong opinions about films, and it's a fitting conclusion that only a single film from the past five years has been Blorgified: Mandy.

For those nostalgic: Alaay's 2009 survey had a top three of Donnie Darko, Crank, and Battle Royale, respectively. All are still here, though they don't necessarily hold the dominant spots they once did. Similarly, his three most despised movies of 2009 (Out On Parole, Tampopo, and Brazil) are all still considered Blorg-worthy.

Lastly, after four surveys, I can finally, finally make fun of my own bias. Previously, both of Alaay's picks in The Silence of the Lambs and Don't Be a Menace were Bottom Films for him, though both are Blorgo-less this year. And while for years Let the Right One In had been his only self-vote for a Top Film, both Portrait of a Lady and Palm Springs now join the higher ranks. For the first time ever, Alaay has more of his own proposed films on his Top list than his Bottom one. The Man can finally have his revenge! (Spoilers: no, he can't.)

TBP kept it spartan this year, settling with only a Top 9 and casting a mere five Blorgo balls.

Three of his Top 9 come from new films: Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Plus One. Combined with having only a Top 9, it meant a ton of his classic fell off. And in some cases they fell off HARD. We've already discussed the massive drop for Drive and nothing emphasizes that more than it being TBP's #1 movie in 2017, yet disappearing from this list entirely. He was actually otherwise quite loyal to his 2017 rankings, only shifting some of the positions a bit, and most of the films that fell off were on the lower half. The biggest exception was Crank moving from 13th to 4th, helping cancel out the big drop it suffered in Alaay's Top Films list. And while both The Great Debaters and L.A. Confidential might seem like anomalies, they were on his Top Films list last time.

In the Blorg world, since he only cast five balls, not surprisingly a ton of those fell off as well, including his #2, #3, and #4 Bottom Films from 2017 (Rubber, Dead Snow, and Chi-Raq). Instead, three of his five Blorgs are from post-2017 films, and the earliest Blorg-worthy film to TBP was Creep in Year 16. Which meant that he didn't cast a single Blorgo Ball for the first fifteen years.

Snobhunter has a Top Film on every other attendee's list except for TheBluePlayers' AND he has two of TBP's five Blorgo'd films, proving once and for all that TBP secretly hates him. You can't argue with the science. Meanwhile, both Houdini and Phil are totally absent from either of his Top or Blorgo'd Lists.

TBP's Top Three from 2009 were Lep in the Hood, Dark City, and From Dusk Til Dawn, respectively. Both Lep and Dawn fell off in 2017 and stayed off, but at least Dark City is still going strong in that #1 spot.

TBP's Bottom Three from 2009 were Repo! The Genetic Opera, Coffee and Cigarettes, and Divorce: Italian Style. None of them were deemed worthy of a Blorgo Ball this year.

For those who might not recall, Elad only made a single change to his Top 15 in the 2017 survey, so these shake ups this year are practically titanic. The troll films - which were powerhouses in the 2013 survey - suffered deeply in the 2017 survey, and while Elad dropped Trollhunter (#7 in 2017) from his list, Troll 2 at least had a nice jump from #5 in 2017 to #2 in 2022. He's the only person to still rep Man of the House - a constant favorite for him - and otherwise his Top Films list mostly stayed pretty pat, aside from the loss of Black Dynamite.

Like Alaay, Elad was a big Sciamma fan with both of her films making his list. Plus One and Palm Springs were the only other post-2017 entrants to his Top Films list. In a fun data point, those four Post-2017 films (Portrait, Plus One, Petite Maman, and Palm Springs) were the exact same four films to make it into Alaay's Top list (albeit at different spots). Great minds, thinking alike.

There were some small shakeups in the Blorg word, though most notable was the percentage ratio of Blorg'd films. Of his 22 Super Dislike films, a staggering 17 of them were considered Blorg-worthy. When Elad doesn't like a movie, he really doesn't like a movie.

Elad's Top Three from 2009 were Leprechaun in the Hood, From Dusk Til Dawn, and Yellow Submarine, respectively. All three are still around and doing strong, but this is the first time since 2009 that another film has broken into the Top 3. Meanwhile, Man of the House has had a wild swing going from #4 in 2009 to #14 in 2013 to #14 in 2017 to #8 in 2022, and we'll see where it lands four years from now.

His Bottom Three films from 2009 were Divorce: Italian Style, Gia, and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Sucka fell off his Bottom Films list in 2013 and has stayed off, so no surprise to see it un-Blorg'd this year.

Elad is the only person not to have a TBP film in his Top list.

We'll talk about the slight reshuffling and the small handful of big drops, but mostly I want to point out that Houdini's list is the least affected by the past five years. There is only a single new film - Palm Springs - and it's in the very last Top slot. As far as Houdini is concerned, the best (and worst) of the fest came from its storied past.

Though not Cube, which went from his #5 film in 2017 to no longer making the cut (as did The Warriors, his former #6 film). Black Dynamite was the benefit of some light reshuffling to claim the top spot. He also had a bunch of former hits sneak onto the lower half of his Top Seventeen which weren't featured in 2017.

Not much to say about his Blorgo's as they're almost lock step with his 2017 survey. The only change is the re-appearance of Malibooty and a couple others falling off the list, otherwise the films Houdini hates continue to deserve the Mark of the Blorg.

Houdini's Top Three films from 2009 were Battle Royale, Lep in the Hood, and Princess Mononoke. All of them are still there, and while they may have been knocked down a few spots, they're still in decent poll position. Cube and The Warriors had been on all three former surveys, so it's a big change to see them missing, but otherwise Houdini has been extremely consistent across the years. (Though Wild Things in his #4 spot in 2017 was a delightful exception.)

Meanwhile, The Other Boleyn Girl and South Park continue to hang in there. Both have been on every single list of his since 2009.

Let's actually start with the Blorgo side this time. For those who might not remember, MMZ only selected a single Bottom Film for 2017: Chi-Raq. The other fourteen Blorg'd films are all new entrants, and while some of them might seem a bit odd, at least they all match up with Super Dislikes. Where MMZ is concerned, that's not always a guarantee.

In the positive side of things, his former #1 in Primer had to make way for the big Year 22 push of both Shortbus and Buffalo '66. They are the only Post-2017 films to break his Top List (not too surprising when you remember he missed 3.5 years), but what is surprising are the number of Pre-2017 films that have made a comeback to claw their way among the ranks of the greats. Blood Simple. (#4), One Day In September (#8), Plup Fiction (#9), The Lobster (#10), Drive (#12), and Tampopo (#17) were all absent on his 2017 survey but have returned to make their voices heard.

Certain films had to suffer to accommodate these new entries. Sad Movie was MMZ's #4 film in 2013, then #8 film in 2017, and now is off his list entirely. And another list, another instance of Black Dynamite suffering a big drop from #2 in 2017 to #13 in 2022.

MMZ was also the only person to realize I forgot to put a #16 spot in my Google Form, which I corrected before the others got there. It doesn't explain why he didn't include a #15 film, but we'll just chalk that up to MMZ being MMZ.

MMZ's Top Three from 2009 were Cube, Donnie Darko, and Oldboy, respectively. Donnie Darko dropped off back in 2013, and while Cube remained in the #1 spot that year, it too was gone by 2017 and has stayed gone. Only Oldboy clings to life. His Bottom Three from 2009 was The Story of the Weeping Camel, Who Made the Potato Salad?, and Gia, none of which are even Blorgo'd this year.

So there's a slight chance The Man didn't understand how to use that Google Form I sent.

With multiple overlapping values for several of his films, I decided to break his films into tiers. For those keeping count, he actually has 22 Top Films instead of the recommended 17, but whatever: the more the merry! It just meant his pool of positive points were spread out more evenly.

Much like MMZ, TM had a bunch of older, pre-2017 films pop back up in 2022, including the return of Troll 2 in Tier 3 and Best Worse Movie in Tier 4. Between this and Elad's shifting of Troll 2 into his #2 spot, the Troll upswing makes perfect sense.

There were a smattering of Post-2017 films here, though most of them in the lower tiers with the exception of Everything Everywhere All At Once in Tier 4. By virtue of having more Top Film it would only make sense that he put more of his own films there, and though we'll have a stat just for this (as we do every survey), I still feel like it's my obligation to point out that fucking 16 of those 22 films were his own. Maybe I shouldn't feel so bad about my 3-out-of-17 after all. (And don't worry, he Blorgo'd 0 of his own films too, an impressive feat given he constitutes 31.31% of all MovieFest selections.)

Much like TBP, The Man was quite conservative with his Blorg'ing, so I suppose that should be factored in. Some of these selections may seem odd, though Dorm Daze 2 has been in his Bottom Films list every year since eligibility, and even though we only watched ten minutes of But I'm a Cyborg, he really, really hated those ten minutes. We already discussed Three Colors: White in Year 3, but for those in need of a refresher: White, which has been The Man's #1 hated film consistently from 2009 through 2017, is not only un-Blorg'd, but not even a Super Dislike anymore. My how the turn tables.

A lot of The Man's Bottom Films from the 2017 survey seemed like weird recency bias picks, so it's no surprise that they dropped off, including Kumiko (#3), Lep: Origins (#4), and Picture Perfect (#9).

The Man's Top Three in 2009 was From Dusk Til Dawn, Battle Royale, and Cube. All are still kicking around in one Tier or another, and Dusk in particular has never moved from that #1 spot. More interestingly to me, actually, are his #4 and #5 films from 2009: Y Tu Mama Tambien and The Fall. Y Tu Mama's legacy dried up years ago (it didn't even make his 2013 Top Films list), but The Fall - which had been somewhere in his mid-rankings every year since the first survey - is gone entirely this time. It was definitely a big loser this time around, as we saw in Year 9.

The Man is the only person not to have an Elad film in their Top list, though it was hard to squeeze in anyone else's films in, I guess.

Phil

Due to ineligibility, Phil does not have a Top or Blorg list this year. I considered re-using his 2017 results, but Phil was always a bit of a wild card with his opinions so there was no guarantee any of them would be the same this time around. Many of this top selections were very niche, Phil-centric films that floated in the middle of the rankings anyway (The Client, The Way of the Gun, The Book of Love, etc) so it's not exactly a tragedy that his data is missing. It is a nice reprieve for the Leprechaun films, however, as Phil for some reason put all of them (even in the Hood) in his Bottom list in 2017, so they all get a nice numbers boost now that they're free from his clutches.

Boy, Snobhunter sure is happy The Man screwed up the survey even worse than he did.

Broken into three loose tiers, Snobhunter continues the trend of showing renewed appreciation to films that didn't make the cut last time around. Six of Snobhunter's Top Seventeen are films that didn't make his Top 15 in 2017, so naturally a ton of the 2017 films fell off to their take their place. The only Post-2017 film to make his Best Of list was Petite Maman, and we've already discussed how it made it onto the Top Films list of everyone who watched it.

Snobhunter somehow managed to cast fewer Blorgo Balls than even TheBluePlayer, with a mere three films being considered Blorg-worthy. Snobhunter's 2017 Bottom Films list was composed of 11 new films that year, so in keeping with a certain whackiness, most of that list has been shed in order to continue to shit on Lil' Pimp. Gayby wasn't even on Snobhunter's Bottom Films in 2017, but it's back with a vengeance this year.

Snobhunter's Top Three from 2009 were Dark City, Donnie Darko, and Battle Royale, respectively. All are still around, though Battle Royale slipped into Tier 2. His Bottom Three from 2009 is more fun, as not only did Coffee and Cigarette, Gia, and Ronin not receive Blorgs this year, NONE of the Bottom Films from his 2009 survey were deemed Blorg-worthy in 2022.

Snobby is the only person not to have cast a Blorgo Ball against an MMZ film (though with only three Blorgo Balls, this is hardly an impressive feat). He's also the only person not to have an Alaay film in his Top list.

Observations

General Observations

There we have it folks, another survey, another chance for Black Dynamite to reign supreme. It actually suffered a big drop since 2017 (which we'll discuss below), but it was such a titan of the survey a few years ago that its spot at the top just couldn't be shaken.

Plus One earns the prize for the best new film on the survey. It had a small 0.32 bump from point scaling (without it, it would have fallen to 4th place below In Bruges) but otherwise it was a huge hit. We'll talk about The Man's performance more in Part II, but let's just say he needed it.

Speaking of In Bruges, it had been the #10 film both in the 2013 and 2017 survey before shooting up to 4th place this year. It has consistently been MMZ's highest-placing film, with Two Days in Paris at 29th place being his best film way back in 2009 (a year before In Bruges was watched).

This was a big year for Alaay, who has two films in the Top Ten in Portrait at 7th and Palm Springs at 9th. He hadn't broken into the Top Ten since 11:14 at 9th place back in 2009, and his highest-placing film back in 2017 was Princess Mononoke way way down in 22nd place. Some of this is due to point scoring, so let's actually talk about that briefly.

Without any point scoring, there's some slight movement in the bottom-half of the Top Ten. Palm Springs drops to 10th place, helping leap From Dusk Till Dawn into the Top Ten right above it (where it probably belongs). Portrait, meanwhile, plummets all the way down to 13th Place just above Battle Royale. You might think this means I'm the big winner of the point scaling system, but I guess we'll just save that discussion for Part II....

Year 10 once again managed to get three films into the Top 10 with no other year coming even close to that distinction. As we'll see in Part II, though, there may be some chinks showing in the Greatest Year's armor.

But enough about that. The real question you all have is obviously: Where the fuck is Petite Maman? With 7.66 points, it clocks in at 20th place, right below Troll 2 and right above Crank. That puts it smack between its unscaled position (43rd) and its fully scaled position (1st), so I'm satisfied with its current spot, even if I assume it'll fall out of it four years from now.

Phil is the attendee whose best film ranks the lowest thanks to a huge point loss for Staten Island Summer. Where it was way up in 6th place back in 2017, it's now dropped all the way to 17th. It is also the highest-ranking film not to feature into any Top Films lists.

The highest-ranking film with a Blorgo Ball cast against it is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, clocking in at 37th. Without that Blorgo, it would have jumped all the way to 20th place.

Gia is once again in the basement with Farce of the Penguins hot on its tail. New entrant Mandy takes the 4th Worst Film of All Time title with Creep right in front of it. Elad wins the award of attendee with the least-offensive worst film, as his Lep Back 2 tha Hood has eighteen other films below it. Alaay similarly managed to stay out of the Bottom Fifteen, but I'm a Cyborg, Don't Be a Menace, and All Hallows Eve are all right on the cusp.

From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money is the worst-ranking film not to have a Blorgo Ball cast against it.

In what was an ALMOST perfect coincidence, I Love You, Phillip Morris is our midpoint at 164th place and -0.10 points. I call it "almost perfect" because Roman Holiday (right above it, with -0.02 pts) is the very first film to fall into the negatives, so we nearly got a midway film that was also the exact midway between the positives and the negatives. Hotly contested Repo! The Genetic Opera with 0.06 pts managed to be our lowest-scoring positive film at 162nd place.

But enough about that. Let's talk about the big winners and losers this year.

The Pain & the Gain

Much was made this survey about the respective increases and decreases that came from changing votes, but without a greater sense of context we can't really get a good idea of who did best and worst. So let's actually pause to go one-by-one through the 10 films that gained and lost the most points between 2017 and 2020.

Name 2017 Pts 2020 Pts Gain
Troll 2 6.05 7.72 +1.67
Repo Man | Observe and Report -1.58 | -3.68 -3.08 | -5.18 -1.50

I already talked about the Trollessaince, and here's one of two prime examples. Leaping from 30th place in 2017 to 19th this year (even more impressive with all the newer films above it), Troll 2 had a huge comeback. Besides re-entering The Man's Top Films list, it leapt up Elad's a few places, giving it a nice overall point bump. It's still amazingly not even in the Top 3 films for its year, but that's just a testament to how amazing Year 10 was.

Repo Man and Observe and Report tie at the 10th Greatest Loser spot. Both of these are thanks to being Blorgo'd out of nowhere. We'll see if either film is able to rebound next time around.

Name 2017 Pts 2020 Pts Gain
Ronin -2.73 -0.98 +1.75
Creep -7.69 -9.24 -1.55

It's not only good films on the rise. Ronin went from being Alaay's worst film in 2009 to almost breaking into the positives in 2022. This was almost entirely Snobby's doing, as it had been in his Bottom Films list every year (clocking in at 15th in 2017) and only just fell off this time around.

Creep, meanwhile, was a mix of not falling out of any Bottom Films lists AND The Man changing his vote to a Super Dislike. Thanks to Blorgo's being unranked, it helped cast a few extra points Creeps way to drop it all the way to the 5th Worst Film of All Time.

Name 2017 Pts 2020 Pts Gain
The Story of the Weeping Camel -6.53 -4.73 +1.80
Black Dynamite 14.22 12.55 -1.67

Yes, that's the mighty Black Dynamite showing up as the 8th Worst Loser of the survey. While still the #1 Film of All Time and still featuring in multiple Top Films lists, it fell from 2nd to 13th in MMZ's, from 8th to dead last in The Man's, and dropped off Elad's altogether. We'll see in the next survey if it's able to rebound or if it will lose that crown for good.

Weeping Camel, meanwhile, benefitted from The Man changing his vote to a Super Like and - while still Blorgo'd by Houdini - the unranked nature of the Blorgo Balls came to the film's aid.

Cube 7.57 5.69 -1.68

The Trollessaince continues! Moving up a few spaces on Elad's list and re-appearing in The Man's Fourth Tier, it didn't take more than that to improve 2017's lowest-scoring Best Film of the Year to the lofty heights of.... the second-lowest-scoring Best Film of the Year. (Thanks for the assist, Psycho Goreman!) Being in a year with only six people, it also benefited from point scaling.

Poor Cube, meanwhile, just can't catch a break. I already hammered home how much it's dropped over the years, but with at 17th Place in Alaay's Top 17, it's entirely possible it might stumble even more next time around.

Out On Parole -7.94 -5.99 +1.95
Tale of Tales -2.91 -4.62 -1.71

FUCK ALL OF YOU. I HATE YOU. I HATE YOU. HOW COULD YOU LET OUT ON PAROLE GET AWAY WITH THIS! IT WAS THREE FUCKING HOURS OF SHAKEY CAM BULLSHIT. AND NOW LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT ITTTTTTTTTTTT!

Frankly, I screwed myself on this one. Out On Parole was my #1 Most Hated film since 2009, and while still Blorgo'd, it didn't get that extra something from being in the #1 spot because of my dumb unranking decision. Though also I hate you, TBP, and how could you let it go un-Blorgo'd. For shame.

Also Tale of Tales sucked even harder for some reason but who cares about that when there's Out On Parole to bitch about.

Green Room 6.97 8.68 +2.01
Crank 9.16 7.30 -1.86

As one film rises, so must another fall. Green Room had some historical revisionism, going from being on no Top Films lists in 2017 to two in 2022 (mine and Houdini's). And while I had it pretty low, Houdini clocked it in way up at 6th place.

Crank, meanwhile, had been a rock since its first appearance back in the 2009 survey. It was the 10th Overall Best Film that year, then jumped to 8th in 2013, and fell slightly to 9th in 2017. Even with all the new competition, Crank had never yielded a Top Ten spot... until this year, where it dropped all the way to 21st. While it actually moved up from 13th to 4th place in TBP's Top Films list, it had big drops in Alaay's and Houdini's and fell of MMZ's altogether.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 4.52 6.54 +2.02
The Warriors 6.63 4.72 -1.91

Speaking of consistency: The Warriors told a similar tale to Crank, just ten spots lower in the ranks. It was the 19th Overall Best Film in 2009, then 18th in 2013, then 21st in 2017, and now.... 54th. Aside from 2009, where it didn't make The Man's Top Films list, both he and Houdini had otherwise included it every single year until now, where it fell off both lists out of nowhere (it was previously 5th for The Man and 6th for Houdini). No longer bouyed by those high-ranking Top Films appearances, and with a few Indifferent votes cast against it, The Warriors lacked the staying power to remain in the upper tier.

This mostly happened because Houdini and The Man declared "Friendship ended with The Warriors. Tucker and Dale vs Evil is my new best friend." Tucker and Dale had never been on a Top Films list before being added to Houdini's, and with The Man updating his vote to a Super Like, that's all it needed to make some huge jumps in the ranks.

Leprechaun 3 0.24 2.37 +2.13
Drive 11.33 9.20 -2.03

Lep 3 might seem surprising until you remember Phil put every single Lep movie in his Bottom Films list back in 2017. That - combined with The Man changing his vote from a "Dislike" to a "Like" - was enough to really propel Lep 3 into the positives. Vegas Gold, baby!

I've already mentioned Drive did badly back in the Year 12 analysis, but you really don't get a picture of just how badly it did until you realize it had the third biggest drop of any film between surveys. It went from being our #2 Overall Best Film in 2017 to 8th this time around thanks to dropping from 2nd place to 13th in Alaay's Top Films list, falling off Houdini's, and amazingly going from TBP's #1 Top Film of 2017.... to not even being on his list this year. Even with MMZ adding it to his Top Films this time around, it wasn't enough to stop the Drive downfall.

Chi-Raq -9.91 -7.54 +2.37
Lil' Pimp -2.13 -4.16 -2.17

There were multiple factors behind the "rise" of Chi-Raq, which I put in quotes because it's still our 9th Worst Overall Film of All Time. One factor is that because it was MMZ's only Bottom Film back in 2017, it made some ground now that it's sharing the spotlight again. Combine that with it falling off TBP and TM's Bottom Films and that's enough to save it from falling into Liberal Arts territory.

Lil' Pimp having such a huge drop is a factor of Snobhunter only casting three Blorgo Balls and this being one of those films. At the max Blorg'd value - and with this film not being on his 2017 Bottom Films list - it made a huge difference, especially with The Man downgrading his vote to a Super Dislike. And so Lil' Pimp's odyssey continues, going from the positives in 2009 to the Bottom Ten Overall Films in 2013 to the middle of the pack in 2017 and back to the negatives. We'll see if Snobhunter remembers he hates this movie next time we do this survey.

Name 2017 Pts 2020 Pts Gain
Three Colors: White -1.78 0.82 +2.60
Gayby 2.95 -1.56 -4.51

Here we have it: the two films that gained and lost the most points, respectively.

Those paying attention shouldn't be surprised by Three Colors: White. It was The Man's #1 Most Hated Film since way back in 2009. Not only did that change, but he even changed his vote from a Super Dislike to an Indifferent. It went from -1.78 pts in 2017 to 0.82 in 2022. So while still a middle-of-the-pack film, it's a big benefactor of The Man giving it a rewatch.

Once again, Gayby falls victim to being one of Snobhunter's three Blorgo'd films. That - combined with falling off MMZ's Top Films list, where it clocked in at 5th place in 2017 - was enough to absolutely savage Gayby for a massive -4.51 pt drop. Just goes to show that voting matters unless a district has been gerrymandered enough to render it pointless. Then it doesn't matter.

The DeLuca Calculator

We end Part I, as is tradition, with a tabulation of Mr. DeLuca's record so far.

Film Pts
Teen Beach Movie 7.12
Staten Island Summer 8.15
All Hallows Eve -5.58
Teen Beach 2 -1.21
Chalk It Up -0.48
Spree -0.48
A Merry Christmas Match 1.29
TOTAL 8.81
AVERAGE 1.26

Our boy is still being held up by those first two titans, as subsequent entries have mostly been lackluster. Teen Beach 2 didn't live up its predecessor, and while A Merry Christmas Match was a nice distraction, all the subsequent years have done is bring down his average. Though Teen Beach 1 gained some ground this year, Staten Island Summer lost any of those gains.

Still, with seven films under his belt, DeLuca is averaging a 1.26 - or a Money Plane - with each outing. Given the law of small numbers, he just needs one more big hit to be back on top.

Join us in Part II where we discuss even more bullshit.
