Part Two

Two quick things before we begin: scoring and tiebreakers. The response to both is simple, in that you shouldn't worry about them. The scoring - at least for the Top/Bottom Fours - is apparent enough, but it gets way murkier in the Top/Bottom Fifteens as I try to lessen the overwhelming impact of those lists. (They kinda dominated 2009's end results.)

I wrote up an explanation on tiebreakers but it was honest to god seven paragraphs, so I'll make it simpler this time: just close your eyes and go with it.

There were definitely some changes from last time that shuffled things up a bit. Cube held on to the title with Con Air actually falling back in points, largely on account of The Man's negative vote against it. Yellow Submarine got savaged this year, losing hold of its 3rd-place slot and damn near falling into the red, in large part on account of the three negative votes cast against it. The 3.6pt win for Cube is tied for the second-lowest amount of points for a Best Film of the Year, and meanwhile Pulp Fiction jumped 0.9pts into a wide open second place.

It's worth noting that with the field of films expanded to Top and Bottom Fours you'll definitely see a ton more parity, and Year One was a wonderful example, what with every film other than Cube receiving at least one negative vote. Even the bottom two films had a little bit of love, and the only reason SLC Punk! took home this year's Worst Film title is largely due to historical revision in favor of Saving Private Ryan, which went from factoring into 4 lists to 2. Phil and to a lesser degree MMZ helped keep This is Spinal Tap from a second-place tie. Phil also made sure it wasn't even close at the bottom with his first place vote for The Client, which, and it may be thirteen years so you'll have to forgive me, I thought was an OK movie, but that could also be because all I could remember of it was Tommy Lee yelling at people.

Best Film of the Year: Con Air with a meager 3.6pts

Worst Film of the Year: SLC Punk!

Missed a Break: The Graduate, one fourth-place vote away from the green

Got Lucky: Yellow Submarine, surviving 3 negative votes against it

Mr. Forgettable: Saving Private Ryan, benefiting from the 4 year break

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Will Con Air still be regulated to second fiddle after the Top/Bottom Fifteen votes come in, or will it gain the edge it needs to pass by Cube? SLC Punk! seems likely to hold onto its title, but what other Year 1 films will face a Bottom Fifteen plummet? And Yellow Submarine factors into three different lists, but were they Best Of or Worst Of...?

Well that was unexpected. Dark City, the fifth-place film back in 2009, jumped to a commanding lead over the massively popular Leprechaun in the Hood, factoring into seven of the eight participant's lists. And while Lep gathered the most first-place votes, it was the extra love thrown Dark City's direction that gave it the edge. What was once a log-jam in 2009 has spread out much cleaner in 2013, thanks largely to huge drops from both Donnie Darko and Maverick. Donnie Darko is actually a fascinating case study, as even with two first-place votes it still couldn't get past fourth place overall.

Meanwhile things turned into a massive clusterfuck in the negatives, with ninth-place The Way of the Gun only one second-worst vote away from tying with How High, which really took a beating from its previous -1.0pt standing. Things were spread fairly evenly thanks once again to vote distribution, with nine of the fourteen films receiving both positive and negative votes. This is also the beginning of Elad's poor-ass memory, a repeat theme throughout this list, as he was playing basketball during the entirety of Ronin, his second-to-least favorite film. Unlike 2009, however, I'm not going to edit people's votes based on my memory of what they did and didn't watch, but I'll assure you right now that we're not done with Elad's Antics just yet.

This is also the beginning of what I like to call PhilFest, where the bulk of Phil's answers seem to wildly diverge from the group norm. He helped keep The Bit Hit and South Park in the green while simultaneously bailing out the second- and ninth-worst films: The Way of the Gun and Ronin. Like Elad's Antics, we aren't done with PhilFest... not by a long shot.

Best Film of the Year: The Surprise Dark City

Worst Film of the Year: How High, with plenty of close competition

Missed a Break: Despite two positive votes, Wild Things just couldn't break into the green

Got Lucky: Ronin, with the smallest margin of any second-worst film candidate

Mr. Forgettable: Maverick, dropping -1.4 pts from 2009

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: I think we know by now that Leprechaun in the Hood isn't going down without a fight, but will the newfound respect for Dark City be enough to fend off Lep's advances? Combined they will factor into seven different Top Fifteen lists, but which one will have the edge? Will Donnie Darko return to its 2009 glory, where it was ranked sixth overall? Year Two was extremely popular in 2009, receiving the most positive points of any year, but will it face heavier criticism with the field expanding to Bottom Fifteen? Even a single appearance will be enough for a rival to pass How High, so the question remains: are any of its challengers shitty enough to take the title?

The rich get richer in Year 3, with the previous champion From Dusk Till Dawn taking a commanding lead over its challengers. Y Tu Mama Tambien, which was originally 0.25 pts behind the top film, took a big fall to third place with PCU retaining its popularity. L.A. Confidential, meanwhile, had a lovely little bump to fourth place. Once again Alaay was the only person to vote for Transformers, this time as his favorite film overall.

Gia came dangerously close to scoring a perfect -8.0, and its -7.2 pts is good for the worst showing of any film in the Bottom/Top Four lists - to no one's surprise. Gia was the only film to appear in every participant's bottom four list. For whatever reason TheBluePlayer voted for it four times, though I only counted it once. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka took had a marginal gain and Very Bad Things slipped in to fill out the second-to-last spot thanks to my convoluted tiebreaking scheme. And the savage fight for Three Colors: White resulted in a dead tie in spite of The Man's best efforts; something tells me he's not done shitting on the origin of Koral Koral any time soon.

In PhilFest I'm Gonna Git You Sucka hilariously took his third-favorite spot (that movie was shit), but overall this was a respectable showing for him. Elad, meanwhile, was once again playing basketball during 90%+ of One Day In September (his second-least-favorite movie), and we'll once again let it ride.

Best Film of the Year: From Dusk Till Dawn

Worst Film of the Year: Gia - horrible, horrible Gia

Missed a Break: Three Colors: White, with three positive votes and nothing to show for it

Got Lucky: I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, 2009's 9th worst film, sliding way out of contention

Mr. Forgettable: Bad Boys, the only film in this entire survey not to factor into a Top or Bottom Four list

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Will From Dusk Till Dawn continue its impressive rise in the final lists? It took 3rd place in 2009, but does it have enough popular favor to stay that high against new contenders? Y Tu Mama Tambien took a hit in 2013, but will the voters remember their first foreign love when the Top Fifteen lists rolls around? What will become of Three Colors: White, and can The Man successfully pull it into the red? Gia is a lost cause, but will it still hold on to the precious Worst Film Overall? And will someone wake up and fucking downvote I'm Gonna Git You Sucka please?

Of all nine years affected by the revisions, Year Four definitely seems to have gone through the most changes. The Virgin Suicides, which once had the second-highest point total from Top Three lists in 2009, fell a solid 1.5pts while still holding on to its title with a surging The Warriors pulling close, moving from four Top Three lists in 2009 to six Top Four lists in 2013. Princess Mononoke not only managed to pull itself out of the red, it grabbed two first-place votes to wind up as third overall. Lep 4: In Space was another big riser, while both Mean Guns and Rock 'n' Roll High School lost some steam. Somewhere Vincent Van Patten is crying tears of pure sorrow. Meanwhile the MagicMan kept up his crusade against Timecop, but with Alaay jumping on the TM/TBP bandwagon it was enough to land the film solidly in the green.

These major revisions weren't just in the positive spectrum, however, with both Cat Ballou and Scorched benefiting significantly from the past four years, much to The Man's delight. Folks thankfully remembered how mediocre From Dusk Till Dawn 2 was, slotting it into five Bottom Four lists, but it still wasn't enough to win the tie breaker against Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, which shifted -1.95 points in the waning years.

PhilFest still remembers Rock 'n' Roll High School, it's proud to declare, as well as - for some reason - Malibooty. Alaay continues portraying the perpetual Cheese, Standing Alone, as for the third time he casts a worst overall vote that isn't shared with any other attendee. Meanwhile The Man, for the fourth time, selects his own film as Best Overall. Don't expect that to change any time soon...

Best Film of the Year: The Virgin Suicides

Worst Film of the Year: Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, thanks to my impossible to explain tie-breaking logic

Missed a Break: The Warriors, lacking the momentum to pass a weakened Virgin Suicides

Got Lucky: Scorched, nearly halving its score in four years

Mr. Forgettable: Basically films five through 10, if we're being honest

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: The Virgin Suicides obviously took a fall, but will that show in the Top Fifteen lists, and can it come close to placing 2nd overall like it did in 2009? The Warriors only made it onto one Top Fifteen list in 2009 - will that change with its recent surge? I'm eager to see what is going to happen to new underdogs of Lep 4 and Princess Mononoke; is this infatuation fleeting, or will they get some Top Fifteen love? Meanwhile we have a dead tie between Lep: Back 2 tha Hood and From Dusk Till Dawn 2, leaving an obvious question: which sequel sucked enough to shake up the Year Four status quo?

When I think of MovieFest at its prime, I don't think of the wonderful stretch in Year 2 or the MagicMan's blanket fort or The Man taking endless footage or Phil surprise showing up at Blockbuster or even indigestion. I think of the double header of The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and Pieces of April, a one-two combination that stands among MovieFest's finest moments. Year Five was the first year of college for most of us (except, of course, MMZ, that failure), and the fact that MovieFest not only kept on rolling but actually managed to pull off such an epic combination is worth mentioning. Not surprisingly everyone else seemed to agree with me, as both films factored into everyone's Top Four lists. Only one other film will have that honor (and the answer might surprise you).

The gain was entirely Pieces of April, leaping 1.3pts and actually appearing on three more Top Four lists than it did in 2009, while Dangerous Lives largely stayed pat. All this love for the heavy hitters doesn't leave much for everyone else, with the delightful Blackball rising 1.6pts and taking a respectable third place. La Femme Nikita survives a bit of a scuffle to come away with 0.2pts and round out the positives, but this year was clearly dominated by the Caulkin/Holmes constituency.

Not much changed in the negatives. Human Nature figured into six lists in 2013 and dropped 1.65 points, and Out On Parole somehow managed to fall off of numerous radars, dropping nearly a whole point. The MagicMan, who voted against Divorce: Italian Style in 2009, now has it as his favorite overall film, but it wasn't enough to save Marcello and his charming ways from factoring into six bottom lists and taking the Worst Film of the Year award. (The only omission was Alaay, who is kinda coming around to Divorce as the years progress and my memory dulls.) Emmy Rossum, meanwhile, managed to blind TheBluePlayer into casting a positive vote in favor of Passionada, which, to be fair...

And look, The Man voted for his own film again.

Best Film of the Year: The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys: two surveys, two years of unanimous praise

Worst Film of the Year: Divorce: Italian Style

Got Lucky: La Femme Nikita, surviving two negative votes

Mr. Forgettable: Both Gossip and The Crimson Rivers

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Last time the competition between Year Five's Top Ten films was close, with Pieces factoring into three lists and Dangerous Lives into four, but this year things definitely change for one of them. And with these two having a stranglehold on the top slots, can any other film squeak into a Top Fifteen list? Divorce: Italian Style is in a bad way, but will people remember the shittiness that is Out On Parole and join me in a jihad to quash those horrible fucking black films forever? Or should I maybe not use the words "jihad" and "black" in the same sentence?

I don't know that any year changed as little as Year 6. The top four is unchanged with most of the films extremely close to their original point totals, and Battle Royale once again walks away with the victory. Coffee and Cigarettes got shit on a bit more than normal, and, just to be cute, I counted the MagicMan's vote as a marginal 0.1pts. I hope to hell it throws off the final numbers. Genesis, meanwhile, featured into three Bottom Four lists and is thankfully solid in the red this time around, while Cecil B. Demented moved from one Bottom Three list in 2009 (Alaay's) to five in 2013.

This is also an interesting year in that there isn't nearly as much of a spread as before, with A Very Long Engagement being the only positive film to receive a negative vote against it while the bottom two films each figured into six different Bottom Four lists.

Once again I have to point out that Elad was playing basketball through both Fronterz and The Wrath of Khan (as was TheBluePlayer), but both of those films sucked so I don't really mind them getting some negative votes. PhilFest, meanwhile, was in full swing, with Dorian Blues and Four Brothers taking top spots. Oh, Phil.

And The Man voted for someone else's film as his favorite overall! It's a Christmas fucking miracle!

Best Film of the Year: Battle Royale

Worst Film of the Year: Coffee and Cigarettes

Missed a Break: What a Girl Wants

Mr. Forgettable: What a Girl Wants

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Battle Royale is obviously the film to watch, and critics wonder if it has enough staying power to regain its #1 overall spot, especially considering it only factored into five of seven Top Four lists this year. The Squid and the Whale had a good showing in the Top Tens in 2009, but will that carry over to 2013, or will 11:14 be able to hold it off this time around? I won't pretend that Coffee and Cigarettes doesn't make it onto its share of Bottom Fifteen lists, but will Fronterz be maligned enough to give it a run for its money?

Three-way tie! Except not really, on account of my convoluted tie-breaking scheme, and so the surprise Oldboy appears from the shadows to take the Film of the Year title. While it, Elephant, and Mysterious Skin all figured into five lists apiece, Oldboy received no negative votes, which is quite a change from 2009. Part of this is thanks to Snobhunter, who switched it from his second-least to second-most favorite film. Meanwhile past favorites Mini's First Time and Dorm Days 2 both suffered some revision and fell into the red. I never thought I'd see the day Dorm Days 2 factored into six lists, but it's one of the many benefits of expanding from Top/Bottom Three to Top/Bottom Four. (Havoc, also, features into five lists.) And somehow Poseidon climbed out of a -1.75pt hole in 2009 to fall in at an even 0pts in 2013.

This is another year of wide-spread points, with only six zeroes on the board. Farce of the Penguins, which before had a commanding lead on last place, benefitted from some increased disgust towards both The Baxter and Bandidas, but not enough to keep it from its fate. Peter Dinklage better send Phil and to a greater degree the MagicMan a thank you, as they were a big reason The Baxter didn't slide all the way into last place. And while The Baxter didn't figure into his Top Three in 2009, it suddenly turned up as MMZ's favorite overall in 2013. Aside from Lep: Back 2 tha Hood, MMZ has the bottom film for every year so far.

PhilFest continues to love them college comedies, throwing some love the way of Dorm Days 2 and The Naked Mile. Houdini really fucking hated The Guru and the celebration ended quickly as The Man once again put his weight behind Oldboy, one of his proposals. It was a good run while it lasted.

Best Film of the Year: Oldboy by tie-breaker

Worst Film of the Year: Farce of the Penguins

Missed a Break: Dorm Days 2, with three positive votes but still in the red

Got Lucky: Oldboy, thanks to the tie-breaker

Mr. Forgettable: Material Girls

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: The points were obviously spread out at the top of the list, but will that hold true when the Top Fifteen lists are compiled? Does Oldboy have enough to hold off previous favorite Elephant, and will Mysterious Skin once again disappear when the Top Fifteens roll around (it only factored into Alaay's list in 2009)? Dorm Days 2 factors into three Top/Bottom Fifteen lists in 2013, but will it be a shift up or down for our wayward comedy? Farce of the Penguins was maligned in 2009's Bottom Ten lists, but will that hold true this time around, or will another film sneak in to claim the Worst Of crown?

Not a whole lot of drama in Year Eight. Crank holds steady at exactly 5pts, and Sad Movie and Glengarry Glen Ross pull a switcheroo. I actually find Crank hilarious in that five people put it as their top favorite and the other two (Elad and Snobby) didn't rank it at all. This is another year with low point totals on account of a missing participant (see Year Six for the last example), so there wasn't really enough momentum with any other film to catch up to Chev Chelios.

There was, however, a bit of a jumble in the red zone, including a bizarre showdown for Lil' Pimp, lead by a very angry Snobhunter. Snobhunter also factored into the Tampopo vote, giving it some 0.4 love and helping keep it far from the cellar. Death at a Funeral was close, but another tie-breaker determined this one, with The Story of the Weeping Camel falling -1.6 pts and taking home the prize.

TheBluePlayer stayed consistent, continuing to dump on The Chumscrubber, and despite his best efforts Elad was unable to keep Glengarry Glen Ross from taking third. The leads, Koenigs. The leads.

Best Film of the Year: Crank, by a huge margin

Worst Film of the Year: The Story of the Weeping Camel, by a not so huge margin

Missed a Break: Lil' Pimp

Got Lucky: Death at a Funeral

Mr. Forgettable: Nancy Drew and her sleuthing ways

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Crank will obviously hold strong, but what about the #2 spot? Can Sad Movie continue its rise, or will Glengarry Glen Ross edge ahead? And what of 2 Days in Paris, MMZ's best film up until this point? Will Tampopo return to its former inglory? One of the contenders at the bottom of the list doesn't show up in any Bottom Fifteen lists: can you guess which one? And another film that isn't either Tampopo, Death at a Funeral, or Weeping Camel factors into three Bottom Fifteen lists, but which one?

The king is dead! Long live the king! For the first time an Alaay film takes the top spot, with Let the Right One In passing Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog thanks to a surprise negative vote from the MagicMan. Dr. Horrible actually took a 1.7pt tumble compared to Let the Right One's 1.2pt rise, and even both The Fall and Wendy and Lucy got in on the surge, with considerable gains at Dr. Horrible's expense. Particularly disappointing to me is the rise of Repo! The Genetic Opera, factoring into three Top Four lists and squeaking its way into the green. Damn you, Giles!

Brazil had perhaps the biggest shift of any film, dropping 2.95pts and falling well out of contention for the Worst Film spot, with only Alaay casting a vote against it. A three-way tie marks most of the reds, and the MagicMan once again plays spoiler, keeping Expelled out of the bottom spot in favor of TheBluePlayer's Who Made the Potato Salad?, which for the life of me I can't even remotely remember.

Once again, the point totals are a bit smaller due to Phil's absence. Once again, Elad (as well as TBP) voted for a film they didn't watch, in this case Chungking Express. Once again, they were playing basketball.

Once again, The Man voted for his own film.

Best Film of the Year: Let the Right One In

Worst Film of the Year: Who Made the Potato Salad?

Missed a Break: Sydney White, despite Houdini's best efforts

Got Lucky: Repo! REEEEEPO!

Mr. Forgettable: Eating Out

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Obviously we're all interested in the fate of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, 2009's #9 overall film. Let the Right One In and The Fall didn't factor into many 2009 Top Ten lists, so it isn't impossible for Dr. Horrible to make a comeback if things stay unchanged this time around. The fun isn't over for Repo!, which makes it into four Top/Bottom lists, but will the changes be enough to toss it back into the red? Who Made the Potato Salad? will only factor into one Bottom Fifteen list, but did another film do badly enough to pass it for worst overall?

The moment we've all been waiting for: brand new data! I don't know about you guys, but Year 10 was easily my hardest year, and I think just by looking at how the positive and negative points were spent shows that this year had a lot of favorites. Even The King of Kong in fifth place factored into five lists, which says something about Year 10's depth.

It's Phil playing spoiler this time, pulling Troll 2 back enough so that it loses the tie-breaker to In Bruges, which took the top spot despite only appearing on four Top Four lists (with three of those in first place). Give a big round of applause to Whackywigg and another one to the MagicMan, who, despite all logic, managed to snag a Best Of award against arguably the hardest competition yet. If I had a fifth vote I would have thrown it Primer's way, so it's a little disappointing to see it in the sixth spot, but still nothing to be disheartened by. I am, however, disheartened to see the lovely An Education in the red, but that's just what happens when you have competition this good. Even with a Top Seven I don't know that I'd include it in my list, so I suppose it will have to hang around in the reds where it belongs.

There was a bit of a cluster in the reds, and while Bitch Slap pulled ahead by factoring into six different lists, I don't expect it to make too many Bottom Fifteen appearances. PhilFest kept on rolling, casting the only positive votes for any film in the red (Van Wilder and Book of Love), and other than that this was about the cleanest split between the good and the bad that we've had yet.

Best Film of the Year: In Bruges in a very narrow race

Worst Film of the Year: Bitch Slap

Missed a Break: Troll 2, one Phil vote away from the title

Mr. Forgettable: One Missed Call and An Education

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Films from Year 10 make a total 22 appearances in Top Fifteen lists, which is easily the record, but the question is which film does the best? Will In Bruges hold on to its top spot, or will one of its many competitors squeeze by? And with so much infighting can a Year 10 film gain enough ground to make a big impact in the Overall Films list? Some of the negative films makes Bottom Fifteen appearances, but none appears on more than one list. Does that mean Bitch Slap will hold strong, or will another film drop enough points to pass it by?

Now this is some hilarious data. Year 11 featured our smallest gathering to date with both Houdini and Phil missing. It was also the year that only The Man, MagicMan, and I picked any movies due to poor attendance at selection. The small numbers are partly why these results seem so tepid.

The other reason is easy: these votes were spread out unlike anything I've seen considering such slim attendance. Nine of the fourteen films received both positive and negative votes with Downfall being the only film to not have a negative vote cast against it.

The winner by about the narrowest margin you can get was Unstoppable, which survived thanks to being positively ranked by everyone except Snobhunter (who put it in his second-least-favorite slot). The movie that started the Denzel trend (and by trend, we mean it and The Great Debaters) very narrowly eeked by Best Worst Movie, and for the second year in a row the trolls are playing second fiddle.

Rubber, the only other film this year to factor into everyone's list, survived the bottom rung of Year 11 thanks to positive votes from Elad and - surprise surprise - The Man, once again bouying his own film. (This is where everyone should ignore the fact that I picked Unstoppable as my favorite.) Despite being a total blank memory in the face of MovieFest, Cemetery Junction fell into the bottom spot and took home a deserved Worst Film of the Year title with the lowest point total of any Worst Of film. Now let's never speak of Year 11 again.

Best Film of the Year: Unstoppable, thanks to a little help from the MagicMan

Worst Film of the Year: Cemetery Junction

Missed a Break: Best Worst Movie, just 0.2 pts away from the crown

Got Lucky: Rubber, surviving despite the collective ire of 66% of the attendees

Mr. Forgettable: Charlie Bartlett, one of only two films to feature only a single vote cast against it this year

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: The obvious answer, considering how mediocre this year was, is how many lists Year 11 breaks into - if any. Unstoppable may have won the individual showdown, but will Best Worst Movie appear on more Top Fifteen lists... or will a surprise contender perhaps usurp the title? I'm also interested to see if the polemical Rubber factors into the Top/Bottom Fifteens or if Cemetery Junction will hold onto its title of Worst Film of Year 11. And for those who want a mild teaser, one positive-ranked film from this year appears in two Bottom Fifteen lists: can you guess which one?

The trolls continue to take home the silver, this time thanks to PhilFest. Both films factored into five of the eight Top Four lists, but Drive didn't have any red against it and ended up clocking in as the Best Film of the Year. The most represented film is, oddly enough, Kaboom, appearing on seven lists (six positive), with Snobhunter obviously wondering what the fuck is wrong with the rest of us. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil placed a respectable fourth and The Break-up Artist survived a slugfest to come out 1.2pts ahead, thanks largely to PhilFest's first-place vote. PhilFest also aided The Tuxedo (along with the MagicMan), placing it solidly in the green. Ever the contrarian, TheBluePlayer picked The Great Debaters as his favorite film overall, serving as Denzel's only vote this year.

The Man did his best to keep his own film out of the cellar, but The Six Wives of Henry LaFey and its overwhelming four worst-place votes were enough to just narrowly pass A Good Day to be Black & Sexy. The Star Wars Holiday Special, meanwhile, somehow managed two positive votes and was much farther out of the bottom spot than I had expected, whereas Shame only factored into one list - Elad's - falling complacently into the red. And Cougar Club, which was turned off twice, fell into a deserve five Bottom Four lists, coming very close to the Worst Of title.

Best Film of the Year: Drive

Worst Film of the Year: The Six Wives of Henry LaFey, by a very narrow margin

Missed a Break: Bunraku, in spite of Snobby's affection

Got Lucky: Drive, with a little help from Phil

Mr. Forgettable: Take Me Home Tonight

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: Both films factor into four Top Fifteen lists, but does Troll Hunter have enough friends on its side, or will Drive hold strong as the film of the year? Kaboom placed on six Top Four lists, but will any of that convert into Top Fifteens? Will The Break-up Artist continue to make an impact? Between The Six Wives of Henry LaFey and A Good Day to be Black & Sexy only one film factors into any Bottom Fifteen lists (three, to be precise), but which will come out as the Worst Overall?

Put another notch in Whackywigg's belt 'cause it's done it again. Not since Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and Pieces of April have all eight attendees voted for the same film, and so Goon takes Year 13 with the largest point total of any film in the Top Four lists. This is largely due to some tepid competition, with Timecrimes as the only viable alternative at 4.6pts. Side Effects and Premium Rush both hold strong, and Gayby survives five Top Four and two Bottom Four lists to place solidly in fifth place. Somewhere in Somalia, a little boy is dying.

Not surprisingly Liberal Arts took the Worst Film reward with six votes and not much competition. Black Butterfly and Give My Regards to Broad Street were both fairly maligned, but neither had quite the presence of suck that Liberal Arts did. The Man (once again) tried to bouy his own film, but John Dies at the End was disliked enough - it was the MagicMan's least-favorite film - to stay solidly in the red. Dredd, meanwhile, factored into five different lists, but didn't have enough in the way of positive votes to stay out of the red.

Looking at the negative votes, this is the only year that no film received just one negative vote; the smallest amount was two. Cutting observations, Alaay! Anyway, it's 4 in the morning and I'm running out of steam, so I'm going to take a break before I keep going. I know I don't need to announce this out loud seeing as it's a webpage and all, but... meh.

Best Film of the Year: Goon

Worst Film of the Year: Liberal Arts

Missed a Break: Gayby, whose 3.6 positive points would have been enough to take third place

Got Lucky: Liberal Arts, cause that turd of a film should've been a fucking -8.0

Mr. Forgettable: Mean Girls 2

Things to Look For in the Overall Bottom and Top Ten Lists: The big question is what will happen with Goon? It made it into all eight Top Four lists, but in a year this weak that doesn't necessary mean anything when the Top Fifteens come around, and it wouldn't take much from Timecrimes to leap into the top spot. Year 13 only makes two appearances in Top Fifteen lists, so even the smallest votes could make a big difference in the overall standings. Meanwhile, Gayby and Dredd were both hotly contested, but will either make any Bottom Fifteen appearances, or will that honor belong entirely to Liberal Arts? (Combined those three films make six appearances, but which ones will place where? Stay tuned to find out!)

Aside from a few new entries and some shifting positions, Alaay's roster is very similar to 2009. Black Dynamite emerged in Year 10 to take his Top Film spot with Year 12's Drive right behind it. The Virgin Suicides shifted from 5th to 10th, Con Air somehow shoved its way through the crowd to #8, and both PCU and Yellow Submarine fell off the list altogether, but overall most of his positive selections stayed pat.

Out On Parole retained its Worst Film title with a surprise Repo! actually moving up five places to take the #2 spot. The Six Wives of Henry LaFey creeps in at slot #13 with Liberal Arts at #15, but otherwise Alaay was very generous with the last four years, regulating all of his hatred for pre-2009.

Every year is represented between Alaay's two lists.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with six films.

MagicManZach is most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with six films.

Pieces of April and Mysterious Skin make their only appearances on a Top Fifteen list.

Definitely a lot of changes with TheBluePlayer including Dark City rising up to vanquish the previous #1 film, Leprechaun in the Hood. Year 10 makes a big impact with The King of Kong (#2 All Time), In Bruges (#4 All Time), and Primer (#14 All Time), but otherwise TheBluePlayer has no newer films in his Top Fifteen, completely ignoring Years 9, 11, 12, and 13. Con Air makes a new appearance since 2009 in the #5 spot with Mean Guns and Princess Monoke - both Year 4 - also making appearances and thus continuing their impressive rise from 2009.

His Bottom Fifteen list has way too many changes to even measure, and kicking off this year's tradition of people's Top/Bottom Fours not even remotely matching up with their Top/Bottom Fifteen lists, I give you TheBluePlayer. We'll see if his discrepencies are enough to take home the coveted "makes least sense" award. Before I begin, however, I should mention that he did specify that he wasn't going to include any (partial) films on his Bottom Fifteen list, so it makes sense that there would be some changes. Anyway, on to the chaos!

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with six films.

In the positive side of things, Yellow Submarine passed his previous #1, Leprechuan in the Hood, whereas The Man of the House plummted ten spots and From Dusk Till Dawn shifted down a notch. Elad added a ton of newer films to the heart of his order including his 4th through 10th favorites. To make room, The Virgin Suicides, PCU, and Pieces of April all fell off the list and some of the previous favorites had to shift down to the bottom of the ranks.

Over in the negatives Divorce: Italian Style retained its #1 Worst Film ranking, though there were definitely some changes. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Out On Parole, The Story of the Weeping Camel, and Urbania all fell off the list largely to make room for a slew of newer films at the very bottom of his fifteen. Year 13 in particular was brutalized, with Liberal Arts, Give My Regards to Broad Street, and Dredd all making an appearance. Also noteworth is that seven of his top eight least favorite films were MagicMan selections.

Overall Elad had a pretty consistent list, but in the sake of being fair, here are some changes I noticed between his Top/Bottom Fours and his final Top/Bottom Fifteen:

Year 8 has no films in either his Top or Bottom Fifteen.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with six films.

MagicManZach is most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with eight films.

Kaboom, Best Worst Movie, The Squid and the Whale, Man of the House, Leprechaun 4: In Space, and Rubber make their only appearances on a Top Fifteen list.

Houdini keeps Battle Royale in his top slot - the only attendee to do so - and largely had a lot of consistency between his two lists. Year 10 makes a big impact with In Bruges at #2 and Black Dynamite at #4, and lower down Drive rounds out the new films. Cube rose from 2009 to take 5th place while Glengarry Glen Ross continuing its climb, both at the expense of Wild Things (fell off the list altogether) and Crank.

Expelled, which wasn't on his 2009 list, shoots out of nowhere to take his #1 least favorite slot, with Weeping Camel holding pat behind it. Liberal Arts (-#5) and Henry LaFey (-#9) are the only new films, with Lep: Back 2 tha Hood tumbling seven spots and Malibooty, Human Nature, and The Other Boleyn Girl falling off this lists entirely. And man does Houdini hate The Guru.

Houdini has some slight discrepencies, but nothing nearly as bizarre as his fellow attendees:

The Man is the most represented in his Top Fifteen with six films.

Eladamri is most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with four films.

Y Tu Mama Tambien and Glengarry Glen Ross make their only appearances in a Top Fifteen list.

Yellow Submarine, The Other Boleyn Girl, Anywhere But Here, and Who Made the Potato Salad? make their only appearances in a Bottom Fifteen list.

I'm going to try to go slow so as to contain myself.

First we'll talk about changes between 2009 and 2013. In the positive side of things, his #2 film from 2009 Donnie Darko fell off the list entirely, as did Cecil B. Demented, previously at #10. Meanwhile both This is Spinal Tap and Tampopo took considerable tumbles (#5 to #13 and #6 to #15, respectively). There are, however, a bunch of new films in his top fifteen, with a staggering seven of them coming between Year 10 and Year 13 including He Got Game his new #2 and the double block of Carey Mulligan that is Drive (#5) and Shame (#6) from Year 12.

On the negative list there's been some, uh... readjustments. His number #2 film from 2009 - Who Made the Potato Salad? - disappeared entirely, as well as #4 and #6-#10. That's right: 7 of MMZ's previous Bottom 10 all dropped out. The new bottom fifteem is top heavy with newer films (Van Wilder: Freshmen Year, Love and Other Drugs, Cougar Club, and John Dies at the End) and Year 8 in particular takes a bashing with The Story of the Weeping Camel, Once, Lil' Pimp, and Death at a Funeral all making the cut. Add that to the three Year 8 films he put in his top fifteen (Sad Movie, 2 Days in Paris, and Tampopo) and that was one memorable year for the MagicMan.

As you all know, I love ripping apart inconsistencies between people's Top/Bottom Four for each individual year as compared to their Top/Bottom Fifteen overall. So with that aside, thank you, MagicMan. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Man is most represented in his Top Fifteen with five films.

The Man made some serious adjustments between 2009 and 2013, and they weren't all from new additions. Looking at his top films, nearly half of his 2009 list fell out entirely including Battle Royale, Run, Lola, Run, Donnie Darko, The Virgin Suicides, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Some of this was replaced by new films including Primer at the #3 spot and Troll 2 at #7, but some of it was top contenders from older years that didn't make the 2009 cut. The Warriors at #5, Crank at #6, and Yellow Submarine at #9 are all new additions. He also has an interesting Top Fifteen in that Years 9 (Dr. Horrible, Repo!, and The Fall) and Year 10 (Troll 2, Black Dynamite, and Primer) feature a total 3 picks each for nearly half the list.

There was also some attic cleaning in the bottom fifteen list in these four years, though not with his least-favorite film, Three Colors: White; it's the price the Poles pay for making him fall asleep the one and only time so far. The Story of the Weeping Camel, Urbania, Coffee and Cigarettes, Farce of the Penguins, and Expelled all fell out of the list, with some older films making a new appearance including Tampopo (-#4), Dorm Days 2: Semester @ Sea (-#6) and Malibooty (-#8). Divorce: Italian Style made a major leap from 9th to 2nd whereas Give My Regards to Broad Street took the fifth place spot in its debut. Some other newer films filter out the bottom of his list.

The Man is the most represented in his Top Fifteen at... HOW MANY FILMS!!! Jesus, just... just see below.

MagicManZach is the most represented in his Bottom Fifteen at six films.

Every one of The Man's Top Fifteen films appears in at least one other member's Top Fifteen.

I Love You, Philip Morriss, Three Colors: White, Ghost Rider, Truck Turner, and The Bucket List make their only appearances in a Bottom Fifteen list.

Films He Proposed in His Top Fifteen: It's actually easier to do it the other way. He didn't propose Black Dynamite and Sad Movie. That's it. 13 of his goddamn Top 15 were his own films. But don't worry, guys, because The Man is totally fair and unbiased. I'm sure he critically analyzed his past selections in the Bottom Fifteen list to balance things out a bit.

Films He Proposed in His Bottom Fifteen: Nope. He didn't. He couldn't even pick one. Not even that shitfest Henry LaFey - which, if you'll remember, actually made his Top Fucking Four for that year. And when you look at the Bottom Four lists for each year, The Man never once picked his own movie for worst overall, whereas 11 of the 13 times he picked his own for the top film. So in conclusion: fuck you, Shebar. (See more analysis of this in Part II!)

In an effort to combat haterism, Phil refused to submit a Bottom Fifteen list, so you should expect the final results of our survey to be a little skewed towards the positive spectrum. He also indicated that his Top Fifteen was in no particular order, so their points will be averaged rather than assigned based on rank.

Year 10 makes a massive impact on Phil's list, but not nearly in the same way as other voters. In a year that featured Troll 2, Black Dynamite, Primer, The King of Kong, He Got Game and In Bruges, Phil's Year 10 reps included American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, An Education, and Van Wilder: Freshmen Year, though as we well know by now, PhilFest simply has different standards than us pleibs. He also has several more new films with three from Year 12 (The Break-up Artist, The Great Debaters, and The Tuxedo) and Goon's only appearance from Year 13. To make room some of his 2009 results fell off including 11:14, Run, Lola, Run, Get Shorty, and National Lampoon's: Blackball. This is, all in all, a very Phil list.

Phil is the most represented in his Top Fifteen at five films.

Some tremendous and slightly odd changes mark the past four years for Snobby's lists. In the positive column, the vast majority of his 2009 list was scrubbed out including Battle Royale, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Elephant, Glengarry Glen Ross, 11:14, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Dark City fell from the #1 spot to #6 and both The Virgin Suicides and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog plummeted to the bottom of the list. The other 11 films are all new. Some (Drive, Black Dynamite, and Troll 2) are from newer years, but other candidates like The Fall at #2, Run, Lola, Run at #7, and Let the Right One In at #8 make some interesting shifts to the dynamics.

Very similar story in the negative side of things, with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Genesis, Cecil B. Demented, Red Dawn, L.A. Confidential, and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan all shoving off. Divorce: Italian Style and Dorian Blues, which were not on his Bottom Fifteen list in 2009, are his new -#1 and -#2. Downfall, Rubber, and Gayby are some new additions with older films taking a bit of a plummet including Gia from 2nd to 8th and Coffee and Cigarettes from 1st to 9th. Also interesting to note is Oldboy, moving from 4th worst in 2009 to 10th best in 2013.

And now, on to the discrepencies!

Aside from Year One, where he didn't attend, every year is represented in the two lists.

The Man is the most represented in his Top Fifteen with eight films.

Alaay ties MMZ as most represented in his Bottom Fifteen with four films each.

Run, Lola, Run and Once make their only appearances in a Top Fifteen list.

Machete, Gayby, Dorian Blues, The Spirit, Teknolust, The Baxter, and Ronin make their only appearances in a Bottom Fifteen list.

Well, folks, that's all I've got for you in this survey. From Dusk Till Dawn gained some traction in those four years and held off tough competition from Black Dynamite and Drive to take the crown. Gia, meanwhile, gained legendary status of suck as it continued its stranglehold on the bottom of the list. You've got to hand it to Year 3, as even a decade in it managed to snag both the Best and Worst Overall Film. Tune into Part II for a breakdown based on proposer and year.
